Creating recovery partition on Hardrive???

Im gonna reformat my bro's 160gig hardrive and reinstall everything. Now when i have a fresh install and all can i create a recovery partition so i can hit a button on start up to recover windows in case of a failure?? If not which version of ghost should i use to make a dvd image of my computer

BTW how does a recovery partition work?
