Creating an MP3 Jukebox type system for your car....

Ok so has anyone ever tried this? I'm not to knowledgeable about cars but I figure it can't be THAT hard. I figure basically I can mount the computer with the mp3's on them in my HD, hook an LCD screen up to it in my front seat somewhere? Maybe have it controlled by a remote somehow if thats possible? Then I'd have to hook up the speakers in my car to my computer somehow, and I really have no clue how to go about that? Or would I be better off buying a new speaker system to do that with? I don' twant to spend to much money, and I already have an older computer I can use for this. Anyone have any experience doing this? How'd it turn out?

Ok well Im reading thru that site, alot of the stuff seems above my head right now. Im a newbie. Anyone wanna give a simple rundown of what I'll need to do? In the meantime I guess I'll keep reading/trying to learn.

thought about it too, but with the fact that you can get 15GB personal MP3 players for less than $200 now it seems to be more cost/trouble than it's worth... if you're going to buy a new head unit anytime soon get one with a line-in on the faceplate so you can hook up your MP3 player directly and you won't have to mess w/ the crappy tape-adapters or FM-modulators...

Once I saw a badass install on an Audi site of a guy who fabbed a 10" LCD touchscreen into his dash which was hooked up to a computer with it's own little operating system for the car and his music/movies... dunno if anyone else has seen it and has the link but that was really impressive

Yep I saw it like 10 minutes ago, and I do have the link somewhere if you want it?

As for the cost/trouble thing, this is more of something I want to do to make my car cool 🙂 A bragging kinda thing ya know?

A guy I work with has a motherboard and system under his drivers seat, which is hooked to a display near his dash. All controlled with a remote he programed via JP1(i think?). It's a pretty neat setup.

here is what you will need.

either a dc to dc power supply, or a power invertor.
via cyrix proc/mobo combo.
headunit with auxiliry input, or a soundcard which has rca outs.
if you get a sound card with rca outs, you will need an external amp for your speakers. so youd need that.
a touchscreen, few niceones out there.

then, youd need mediaengine. and a screen shot of a GPS navigation system (so its 100% legal looking)

and then custom mount the lcd. use the lcd as input.

thats a quickie.

I have a Clarion head unit with AUX input line-in and an iPod with a cup holder mount. Took me 1 hour to install the head unit and 30 seconds to install the iPod 😀 Ultimate solution for me, and I love my system...

I don't get it: apart from the fact that some people would have fun doing it, what are the advantages compared to a mp3 cd player or an iPod type of solution?

Having a fully custom system, unlimited storage (well, depending on how many hard drives you can fit), GPS for sat nav, videos, dvd's etc

Check out my sig for my setup

I've been looking at the kenwood keg. Seems to have a lot of nice features. I believe the full setup runs around $750 with head-unit. That's for 15GB IIRC.

Some people have been getting full custom systems for about $700 with 120gb (or more) and sat nav etc too

Confused, where did you get your Xenarc touch screen? I can't seem to find them anywhere other than Ebay 🙁

There is a new kid on the block, which are the Lilliput screens, in competition to the GAIN based screens that my Xenarc is.

Some links 🙂
Xenarc Direct
DigitalWW

or you can get things on Ebay 🙂

If you want any more information feel free to PM me 🙂
