It must be that my DIR655 simply can't do it, or i'm just an idiot. I have yet to be able to set up a wireless repeater....

Heres how the actiontec is set up

IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Broadcasts via Channel 11
SSID : network1
WEP security (for distance reasons): Key is 1234567890 (example)
DHCP: Configured and running

now, if I were to go and get a WRT54G router, how do i set it up? What IP address does IT get? What channel does IT broadcast on? Do i use the same WEP key? Do i enable DHCP on it or do i use the Actiontec?

Tape up and cover the WAN port on the WRT54G, you will never use this port for the intended purpose. We need to configure the WRT54G so plug in the WRT54G to your computer via a LAN port on the router and go to its setup page. It might be 192.168.0.1 or the same as the fios router. Disable DHCP on it. Give it a static address that isn't used by any other devices ie: 192.168.1.77. Set the security, ssid etc the same as your actiontec fios router. After you did all of this, unplug the WRT from your PC and set it where you need it.

Plug the WRT54G into one of the 'lan' ports on your actiontec router via ethernet cable. See the list of available wireless connections and figure out the correct connection. Log in to the WRT54G from your computer. Done. I think the DIR655 should be able to do the same but I've never used that particular router.

Get a router that supports DD-WRT. Then configure it as a Repeater Bridge, I think it is. I did that when I was on vaca, and borrowing someone's internet access from a neighboring house. It was pretty simple. (Yes, I had explicit permission.)

I was using an Atheros chipset for DD-WRT, which is configured a little differently than the Broadcom platforms when it comes to setting up a wireless repeater. I had to create a "Virtual AP", and then give it a name, and password. Then, once the router locked onto the router I was repeating, then on the same wireless channel, I would be able to pick up the SSID of the virtual AP.
