Creating A Backup Copy of a Program

Hi guys. I wnated a little clarification on this matter as a CYOA thing.

I have a client that runs a particular software and they want me to make copies as a "backup."

My question is whats the law on this? Back in the day it was One backup of copy for personal use, so long as it was installed on only one computer.

Is this still the same or has all the laws changed?
