I have a toshiba laptop running winxp home edition. i went to defrag the drive since it has been awhile and i cleaned up some of the junk files. it tells me i need to run chkdsk/f so i say ok to do it on the restart. i then restart it does all the checking and says that it fixed something...i think it related to actual free room on the harddrive or something. then it starts up normal. i then click on defrag again and i get the same error. anyone have any thoughts or ideas to truly fix the problem so that i can run defrag. thanks in advance...

Always run chkdsk with the /F or /R switch. Running it without these switches on an online volume can give you erroneous results if the MFT changes after the check starts.

Without defrag in the picture at all, run a chkdsk /f two times back to back (rebooting inbetween obviously). You should NOT get any errors the second time around. To review the results look in your application log for a WINLOGON event just after boot.

If you get any errors at all on the second run of chkdsk then something is seriously wrong. See if you have any event 50,51 or 55s in your system log.

If you don't get any errors then boot to safe mode and run your defrag again.
