My gf was playing a game and all of the sudden it froze. She tried to alt tab out and the colors got all messed up. About 5 seconds later we hear this loud pop. When I finally got the drive open, the cd was completely shattered. Crazy stuff.

yea it happens, the drive overspins the CD and shatters it, it has happened to others, not usially during a game tho

there was 1 drive the did it alot

Sue the Drive maker for a replacement disc. Or just call burn a new one from your pirated copy. heh.

Yeah, that Myth Busters one was great. They had CD piece embedded in the steel casing of the CD drives and stuff. Was freaky. That's why CD drives don't go over 52x.

I've had 2 disks shatter on me in my Kenwood 52x Drive. Friggin' POS drive, and I paid a buttload of money for it when it came out way back when (I think over $125).

how does the CD shatter/pop?

Does it get jammed and then the pressure just causes to crack?

It's to do with the speed the disc spins and minor fracture points in the disc (tiny cracks).

There's a fancy name for it.

if they spin fast enough they will just blow apart, the force just shatters them

also if the thing is spinning when it engages teh CD it can shatter it that way

i can upload the vids of CD shattering i have

My guess is it spins way to fast, comes out of place at a very high RPM and bangs into a wall, and crack! Theres some new confetti.
