I just got the below message from a co-worker of mine regarding an experience she had at the ATM in front of my building. Anyone know if its possible to hack an ATM or scan someone's pin number wirelessly?

--

At the PNCBank window on 13th & H Streets, Friday, to withdraw money.

A young man (latin/asian, wearing a purple throwback jersey (42)) driving a green TransAm, had his car hood up, parked directly in front of the ATM machine. He was standing on the driver side of his car with the door open, appearing to be working some kind of device, as an electro-static sound (the sound of electric wires touching) rang from his car. My friend who was parked in front of him asked him what he was doing. He replied that he was "scanning something."

I got out to the car and went to the ATM machine, requested cash (300.00). The ATM machine started to churn over and over. I was afraid that the ATM had eaten my card. As I turned to inform my friend that I was having ATM problems, this young man had his sights on me. The ATM finally spit three 20 dollar bills on the ground and suddenly slammed shut without allowing me to get the rest of my money, but returned my card after one last churn, but no receipt.

I returned to the car. My friend again asking the young man "what was he scanning." The young man started to act nervous. I said, "let's go, no need to get into any trouble." We rode around the corner to check to see if he would be at the ATM window. He was still at his car with the hood up. We rode around the corner again to kill any suspicion that this was just a mechanical problem with an ATM.

Well, the young man was at the ATM window withdrawing money this time and when he saw us watching him, he ran to his car, locked it, walked briskly, and then broke into a full run for the International Bank Building.

Well, I think that this fellow knows something about how to manipulate ATM's electronically (wirelessly).

I made a report to the Police and will post the complaint with the Bank tomorrow.

It is possible to determine what someone is keying into the ATM machine.

no see what you have to do is while someones at the ATM you commando crawl up to them ever so quietly and inject them with sleep poison, as they fall you then take their place after their PIN has been entered and procede to get money out. when they wake up... theyll have no idea what hit them and will be wondering why $ is gone

at least thats how i do it o.0

pretty cool if that guy knows how though LOL

Why the hell would a bank ever even include wireless capability in an ATM machine? On that reason alone i say this is bs.

there are small devices thieves can attach to an ATM that reads your card as you insert it and then they capture your PIN number. Then they encode a card with your account info and can make withdrawals.

I would sincerely doubt it.

There are numerous scams for ATMs out there, and none of them require specialized equipment. The likelyhood that someone would spend the time to do this sort of attack is doubtful at best.

Furthermore, to do this in broad daylight in a high traffic area would be career suicide for a thief.

didn't find it on snopes but it does sound like one of those urban myths things.

like I said, I can't speak to his story, but the idea of wirelessly stealing PINs and account infom from ATMs is real, despite several posters saying it's not.

Surethe idea is real, any idea is a real idea. The fact of it is why would any ATM be wireless? Why wouldthey open such a huge door for someone to break into it. They know that as soon as an exploit was found it would be all over the internet and people would be pulling money out faster than they can fix the problem.

why are you assuming he was accessing the ATM directly? He could have been using a wireless card scanner and camera like Snopes talks about.

Did you even read the op? This thread is about whether the ATM itself could be accessed wirelessly. You are the one running off your your own little tangent with the card readers and cameras. No one is disputing whether that is possible so move the hell on.

I read the OP....you obviously didn't. He asked if it was possible to scan for someone's PIN wirelessly. It IS....via the method I posted.
