It has always been this way. In my experience with windows and linux, waking from sleep only takes a few seconds and boom, there it is. On my MBP however, I open the lid, tap a key or mousepad click and up comes the login screen but its frozen for about 90 seconds, then maybe the beachball for a second, then it goes black and I have to tap another key to wake it up again and after a bit longer the cursor starts blinking and I can enter the password.

Is this pretty much normal for all OSX?

Mine is a 2012 MBP w/ 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, 2 core i5, non-retina 13".

No, that's incredibly NOT normal. How long have you had the machine? Has it always been this slow? Even with my OG MacBook (Core Duo, slow slow slow platter drive) it was up in running in a second or two after opening the lid.

95% of the time mine wakes up in a few seconds.

The other 5% of the time it takes about a minute...don't know why, but doesn't happen often enough to be a big deal.

Pretty much the same here. Also get it to refuse to wake and has to be forced shut down and started again.

I've had it since January 2013. I can't remember if it has always been this way or not. I'm not sure how to investigate what is holding it up either. I think it maybe depends also on how long it has been idle with the lid closed. If it has only been a few minutes it just comes back on but after some hours it does the thing I described in my OP.
