Okay, at the local Georgia "Big Chicken" KFC, home of the forty foot chicken of Marietta, GA, my friends and I began to ponder this question. After all, we were on vacation and we had the freedom to act like the weird Californians we are.
So, if you were set into a huge tub of mashed potatoes, would you sink to the bottom or not? We had some serious scientific argument going about this, to which I just listened (English major, science isn't my thing). With the brilliance of AT, maybe we can figure it out.

I think so.. I've always wanted to fill a pool with gelatin and dive in but you would sink and die :p

freshly made mashedpotatoes if thick enough float and get burns on your body.

i think you would eventually start to sink though

depends on if they are powder or actual potatoes.

powder + water or milk tends to create a vicsous soup that you appear likely to sink in

actual potatoes seem to be firmer and tend to offer more resistance under load

dependent on the person, i would say the powder vs actual potatoes concept above would be the solution

I would have to agree with this. KFC's mashed taters are pretty thin.
