Crazy P5W DH Deluxe problems that fixed themselves?!

This is the story:
- last summer, I get a P5W DH and build my rig with one of the first E6600s available
- at the time, the following problems were noted
- hard drive activity light was always on
- BIOS hardware monitor (or ASUS PC Probe) was crazy slow and unresponsive
- unplugging the power (or turning off the PSU) would wipe the CMOS
- I gave up on fixing these issues, which continued through a myriad of BIOS upgrades and hardware changes (RAM went bad and was replaced; video cards were swapped twice; etc).
- there were a few other odd problems, e.g. involving Vista, AHCI causing errors, etc. but those were worked around.
- a few weeks ago, I buy an 8800GT and had crazy trouble getting it to fit in the case (Antec Solo)
- at some point while trying to install the video card, the rig powers on. I panickedly unplug the power cord.
- when I plug it back in, I noticed the following
- CMOS wasn't wiped (even though it should have been, based on prior experience)
- hard drive light is now working fine
- BIOS hardware monitor is working a bit more reliably.

So, I'm puzzled.

Is it possible that there was some kind of short over part of the board that somehow got fixed when I moved stuff around to make the new video card fit?
