crazy monitor situation

i have a 17 inch monitor.........a crappy one at that but....the ATI drivers report that it can do 1280x1024 and has a max refresh rate of 120hz (which obviously at low res) i think it wll do 60hz at this res.

currently i am using 1024x768 at 75 hz
and after realizing that my PC is one big bottle neck with a graphics card on the end i decided i would play at higher resolutions (after all i enabled 6xAA and 16AF in UT2003 and dropped 1 fps in bot match)

so i benched ut2003 again at this higer res and i never really noticed the 60hz (till i got bk to desktop) but then when i load the game up the next day.....my monitor says "out of range" i then have to go diggin round in the .ini config files to change the resolution back to 1024x768

it seems my monitor will only do 1280x1024 when it pleases....any ideas?

Did you try going in: Display properties>Settings>Advanced>Displays> click on monitor> under monitor attributes, clear Use DCC information, override the refresh rate and choose whatever you want, in your case 75Hz. You may also need to set the maximum resolution to 1280x1024 and maximum refresh to 75 or 85. but normally if it's a 17" it'll do 60Hz under 1280x1024.
I had the same problem some time ago so i set them to max 1024x768 and max refresh rate to 85 Hz (or 75Hz)
