crazy mattress ideas

Don't you hate shopping for a mattress? Going to a mattress store feels more creepy than buying a used car to me.

Anyways, I am in the market for a new mattress, and I have some crazy ideas.

First of all, I had the costco memory foam mattress previously and liked it. It costs like $500.

But what I am thinking is that maybe I don't need to spend $500.

Ikea has mattresses that are like $350. But they seem kind of crappy.

However, looking at their mattresses gave me an idea. They are only 6.25" thick, and made of crappy foam. Even their memory foam ones seem substandard.

So, why don't I build my own mattress by combining a 4" memory foam 'mattress topper' with a 3" topper?

Most 'memory foam' mattresses are ten inches, with 3 inches of memory foam on the top, and seven inches of medium density regular foamon the bottom.

Why not seven inches of memory foam? I can do it for just $220....

by combining these two pads:

http://www.overstock.com/Home-...r/1657609/product.html

(a 4 inch 4lb pad, with a plush looking 3inch egg-crate style pad.)

What do you think? Is this crazy? Would it work?

A $220 California king memory foam mattress!? (I would probably trim it down to a full tho)

My other option that I was considering was buying this memory foam mattress for $350:

Toppers aren't meant for that kind of thing. Without the harder foam core there will be no support and you'll fine yourself waking up in a sinkhole.

if you ARE married, then just go buy a real mattress at costco

Memory foam mattresses usually have a LESS firm core than the top layer. For example, the mattress I linked to above has a 2.5lb bottom layer, and a 4lb top layer of memory foam.

You must hate your back. The pittance you save will just end up going to a chiropractor when you lose the ability to stand upright.

I've done the CheaperPedic on Fatwallet with great success.

Don't remember the costs since it's been years, but was a 6" foam base from JC Penney. 3" memory foam deal, 2" topper and a 1" soft as silk-tough as nails thing (super light toppity top deal).

Feels great. Cost was under $300

Are you basing that on any logic or empirical evidence, or just that the idea is crazy?

Wow...thanks for the info. Can you go into more details about what your 2" and 1" toppers are? Are they memory foam too? Any idea what density they are?

Thank you!

I don't know where you're getting your information, but you definately want tougher foam for the base. The density just describes how long the foam will last, not actually how firm it will be.

In other words..do your research :p

Oh, also, I've heard the Overstock ones are pretty trashy. Heck, if you want to go cheap, Wal-Mart sells em too. At least then you can bring it back if it isn't good enough for you.

The idea just sounds crazy and hokey. Where's the support? If I slept on something that unsubstantial, I'd be in a wheelchair.

Is a couple hundred more really that much for something you spend as much as a third of your life on? When I buy mattresses I never cheap out.

What about Craigslisting a used mattress and just getting a cheap topper for it? I've seen several mattresses being given away free. Plastic wrap mattress, foam topper, sheets + comforter.

I guess "harder" wasn't the right word. Maybe "more supportive" or "firmer". I've seen a lot of mattresses which use a polyurethane core, which is "firmer" than memory foam (this is how mine is).

Looking up the CheaperPedic at Fatwallet, they use a denser/firmer base on the bottom.

...anyway, the whole "pound density" thing isn't exactly consistent across different manufacturers.

Ya....as I read more I am finding that the whole density thing seems to be very inconsistent and not as straightforward as it first seems.

Wow, that thread is still there - my posts are on page 52 thru 55. I bought a mattress from foamdistributing.com three years ago and it's still fantastic. Amazingly, the price hasn't gone up much - it was $342 then, now $388. Free shipping.

One thing I remember is, go to regular stores and check out the memory foam mattresses - some people really don't like the feel.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one. I had to buy a mattress for the first time since moving out and man the dealer was a slimeball. Surprisingly I was able to haggle the price down to 50% of what he asked. ($500 to $300) for a queen sized mattress of pretty good quality (some Sealy thing). But yeah, after that I day I will forever refuse to pay the price tag on a mattress now that I know the price is very negotiable.

Yup went and found mine.

I remember now what I ended up with.

5" firm foam base from JC Penney (on top of my old box spring set)
3" Fomex
2" Isotonic
1" Quiltex

Super comfy. Don't remember the ILDs and stuff though as I haven't messed with the stuff in 4 years or so.

Have you considered a latex mattress? It should cost around that same price but the comfort factor may justify the price.

Polyurethane, some say, is a bit too constraining, and too hot.

Buy both, mix it up, live a little.
