crazy heart rates

For you runners and athletes out there--

I've been running for about 8 years now, not competitively but mostly for training for wrestling or when I was in the Marine Corps. Not really a fast runner-- pull in about a 20min 3 mile run/6 min single mile when i'm training regularly.

Recently started running in the gym and tried those heart rate things out on the treadmill. It said i regularly run in the 190s (BPM) when i'm on a moderate run (not killing myself). The chart on the wall says that at 23 years old, my max should be somewhere around 190s and that i should be running in the 150s or so. Thought the machine was screwing up but recently bought one of those chest heart rate monitors and it said the same thing. It actually beeped at me when i started running uphill and went above 200. If i was really pushing myself i'd probably be easily in the 230s.

Some of the stuff that i've read online says that i could just have an abnormally high max heart rate but that its not dangerous.

Anyone else have any experience with this?

IMO you should get it checked out by a doc, you can have some condition, i beleive it would be very dangerous with that high of a heatrate

Don't know what "real" resting is (since youre supposed to be sedentary for like 20 minutes) but just sitting here typing after getting up to grab the heart monitor, it's upper 50s.

And yeah, i'm going to go see the doc about it. I figure after running for this long its not terribly dangerous (or i wouldnt be here), but it spooked me a bit.

I never trust those monitors on the equipment, get a proper monitor; ie heart belt, and if it's still that high get it checked out.

yeah i have one. Tried it, same thing. I've measured my pulse before while running but always dismissed it as me not counting right because the numbers were too high...

If it was an easy run, chances are you were not at 190-200 bpm. Those machines are never really accurate. However, the 220-age formula for figuring out your max HR is also woefully inaccurate. Fit people can have wildly high max HRs with absurdly low resting HRs. If you're fit, and you seem it from your post, your max HR could easily be around 220. I'm 20, and I've had my HR go up to over 200 on a moderately hard run.

it wasn't "easy" as i dont see the point of "easy" runs, but it was moderately paced, i'd say. I usually run just above a pace where i can talk normally. So i'm not wheezing but i can't carry on a regular conversation either. I maintain a HR in the mid-high 190s according to three different machines i've used. When i run uphill or do suicides/sprinting, it easily goes up to 215 and that's not even my exhaustion point. Going to see a doctor about it next week though if i've been doing this for the past 8 years or so, i dont figure its immediately dangerous.
