So, was in Austin/San Marcos over the weekend hanging out with dirty hippies and having a great time.

On the way home, traveling North I-35 from Austin, we were in bumper to bumper traffic going 70 mph. I'm not sure what causes YA'LL to think that is a great idea, but you continue to get in horrible car accidents and cause all sorts of mayhem.

Going through Austin, something caused the 70mph traffic to come to a screeching halt. Our van made a safe smooth transition from 70 to 0 unscathed. However, the driver next to us wasn't so lucky.

We hear a horrible screeching of tires. As I look over, I notice the SUV make its way towards the concrete divider to avoid hitting cars around him (namely us). The front of the SUV exploded into hundreds of pieces and the SUV whipped around and around. It caused a huge accident, just feet away from me.

Slow down and pay attention, everyone, everywhere, please. This guy made it out all right, but he sure caused a big headache for everyone. And likely numerous injury for people behind him on the interstate. CRAZY BASTARDS.

Austin has some of the worst driving I've ever seen and I've driven in NYC, LA, Chicago and Boston.

Welcome to every major highway in Texas on the weekend. I've seen the same thing happen on I-10 going East towards Houston, still 40 miles from the city.

This is the truth.

A big problem is that half of the people drive like it's small town TX, the other half like they're in a race.

Lots of attention is required...

Oh, and we made an attempt to stop and help, but there is no where to stop on the interstate there. So ridiculous. There was probably 10" between the concrete divider and the interstate.

Edit: Well maybe more than 10", but definitely not enough for someone to stop safely.

The Upper/Lower Deck split downtown is the result of very poor planning in the 60's.

Southbound, but this gives an idea:

Austin driving isn't as horrifying as Houston's I swear. I've lived here for almost 8 years and sometimes I'm still a bit scared getting on the highway.

Austin is 10x worse than Houston.
Austin's roads were never designed to handle the amount of traffic they do.
The only bad thing about Houston is worrying if the guy next to you was going to shoot at you.

The last time I went from DFW to Austin for a Microsoft Launch Event it was pretty bad. A trip that normally takes a few hours was doubled due to rush hour traffic on 35. Everyone who lives outside Austin all jumps on 35 to get to work and its mayhem for the last 40-50 miles.

... the other half like they're in a race.

I wonder daily what the hell has people in such a damn big hurry that they couldn't foresee needing more time to get wherever they're going. Or I guess they just like to drive like they own the highway.

I see people throw their hands up from the wheel like they're exasperated because they've caught up to someone in the left passing lane but don't give the people ahead of them time to change lanes before they pass them on the right.

Yes and people are perfect drivers everywhere else?

There are stupid drivers everywhere.
Ever been to Atlanta? No that is a scary experience.

I live in DFW, there are some terrible drivers here, basically everything inside the 635 loop is horrendous. Austin is bad, I've still never seen worse than Houston though.

Phoenix was probably the best I've seen in terms of roads and conditions, though I imagine drunks and such can ruin just about anywhere.

I hate some DFW drivers. They generally are either inattentive or try to be reckless/aggressive w/o actual driving skills to back it up.
