crazy downloading problem

I've noticed a problem with downloading some files from various media on the internet (IRC, FTP, Web), where it will download to a certain point, and then simply hang and go no further. This spot seems to be at a different completion percentage with each file, but for each file, it always stops in exactly the same place. Also, this only happens for some files. Others are completely unaffected and download normally.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Im running Win2k SP2, with a NetworkEverywhere 10/100 ethernet card, if that helps at all to know. If anyone can provide me with ANY insight as to what the heck is going on, i would be MOST appreciative!

Thanks!!

How big are the files?
Is the partition that you have your OS on, more than big enough to handle the file size?

it has nothing to do with filesize, as far as i can tell

i am using NTFS for all the partitions, and in any case, ive noticed the issue on files ranging from 3MB all the way up to 250MB

Edit: Also, I have 250GB total hard drive space, so there is more than enough room for the files to be downloaded. All my drives have a minimum of about 1.5GB free

hmmm....I remember reading something about IE not being able to download files over a certain size on Netscape's site. Do you have the latest version of IE? and if so, try downloading Netscape or another alternate browser...just a stab in the dark here

As I noted, this is not isolated to IE by any means. IRC and FTP both do the same thing with the same files. I did notice, now, that I was able to get one of these files after moving my computer into a different room of the house with a different ethernet jack/cable. Im really confused now...

How are your cables routed?
They are unsheilded, right?
Are they close to any source of EMI, large fans, florecent lights, etc.?

the cables are unshielded, yes, but i dont think any of them run near fluorescent lights or power lines or anything of that sort

i may be wrong on that however

Did you ever get to start downloading from the internet. I am having similar problems. I have Win 2k and am not able even download the windows update. here is my situation "
I just built my new PC with ASUS A&V266-E Motherboard and AMD 1.8 Ghz processor with 1 GB RAM and two hard disks of
60 GB (5400 RPM) and 120 GB(7200 RPM). The 60 GB HDD is the primary drive. I installed Windows 2000 professional.
I have configured my TCP/IP settings and connect to the
internet thru my cable modem connected to the ethernet card. The problem that I am facing is though I can connect
to the internet sites I am not able to download anything - even Windows update and IE 6. When click "save the file"
the SAVING window comes up but stays there for ever. I
have tried reinstalling the OS but in vain. Is there any
security settings in IE 5 that is stopping the downloads?
I have been trying to solve this for 2 days now but in
vain. Will really appreciate if someone could suggest a
solution. Thanks to all in advance.
