Crazy domain costs

I inquired about a domain the other day which currently hosts nothing but a bunch of crap links as a domain place holder. Here is their response:
Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you very much for your interest in <insert domain name here>. The world average domain name sale price is $1400 but we think $1000 should be proper. Is that acceptable with you? Thank you.

Show them GoDaddy.com and counter with $20...

i don't think they are claiming registering would cost that much.. $1000 would just be the price for the domain name itself. In any case, I would still counter with $20 🙂

if you want, post the name here and we will all bid less than $20, making your bid their best offer 🙂

Tell them that the world average buy price is $12.34, but you think that $14.98 would be proper.

Whose arse did they pull that out of??

Thats the average. There are still some domains that go for alot, skewing the avg.

$1000 is a lot, but you're not registering a domain, you're buying a domain they own. Some big domains like movies.com or something go for millions.

actuaqlly it's $8.95 at godaddy i think 😉

I think the point of offering $20 would be to tell them they're getting a good deal, just like he's getting a good deal at $1000 instead of $1500...

Alas, makes me wish I had gotten in on the domain name frenzy back in the mid 90's when they were free 🙁
Free? What the heck are you smoking? They were $70+ for 2 years durring the most of the mid-late 90's.
