Crazy day for suprise mail- got subpoenaed today.

Not sure but I think they finally caught my old neighbor that stole my DHL packages. They're having court on the same days I was supposed to go on vacation though. 🙁

Apparently the neighbor was on probation, so if they convict him it's back in the slammer. He was stupid and put the packages under a blanket in his car, the cops picked the lock and found it.

I really don't want to go testify though.

Free coldplay tickets = 🙂
Subpoena = 🙁

Just give a written deposition.

You wouldn't be expected to testify that you saw your neighbor steal them, would you? If they only want you to testify to the fact that your packages were missing and what they caught the neighbor with was actually ordered by you (in other words, simple statements of fact), and if the vacation plans are critical, see if they'll let you do a deposition instead.

Maybe see if you can just give a deposition instead?

I doubt there's time, this is for a week from Monday. They just mailed the subpoena, wtf? I have a call in to the district atty's office, hopefully the guy just pleads it out. I think his defense is "the DHL driver handed it to me, so it's not a crime."

It got more complicated than that. The DHL driver delivered it to the wrong address, but when he went back the dumbass neighbor deined having the packages. He called the police, the neighbor called me, chaos ensued and then the neighbor admitted "finding" some speakers belonging to me. However when they searched his car they found the other missing items from the order. They then searched his house, etc. It was pretty nutty.

The cops picked his car lock?

Yes, they left after banging on his door for 1/2 hour and him not coming out. Said they didn't have probably cause to search. They got back to the station and came back 20 minutes later after having a chat with the head honcho, who apparenty had a "fvck this guy, just go get him and we'll work out the details later" attitude. They came back picked his car lock and searched his house.

from my vast experience with cop shows, the evidence will be thrown out and all charges will be dropped. then the guy can sue the cops.
