If you want a phone that will:

a) Work in North America

and

b) Work outside major metropolitan areas

Stay away from GSM. Of course, I am just assuming you are in North America.

The coolest I've seen for NA is the Kyocera Smartphone. TriMode CDMA digital, so oyu are set for pretty much everywhere in the US and Canada, plus a palm OS PDA built in.

I'm also looking for a cell phone. I don't know much about cell phones but I want one that can send text messages and all that other fun stuff. My dad has a Nokia 8290 (is that the right numbers?) if it makes a difference and I can get on a plan cheaper with him. I have a buddy who works at radioshack and he tells me Samsung is where it's at.

The Samsung model is nice, but if you're willing, you might want to wait a "bit" and check out the newly revealed Handspring Treo? Just a suggestion.

Alienwho: The Nokia 8290 is a GSM phone. GSM is used by Voicestream and by Cingular in California. The Samsung your friend is probably referring to is a Sprint PCS phone, so you wouldn't be able to use that one with those two companies. Seeing that you have GSM, I'd look into the Nokia 3390/3390 Gold/3395 - all revisions of the same phone. They are part of the new model lines of Nokia phones - slightly bigger than the 8200 series, but have more features. Hehe if you place one on vibrate and call it while it is standing up veritcally, it will walk across a table...ok so my friends and I are pretty lame...but still :)

Check out the Kyocera smart phones.

My wife bought a new Nokia 3390 from VoiceStream yesterday for $33.90, it does A LOT more than my trusty Nokia 6190 but so far I'm in geek heaven.

Have a looksee at the Nokia 9290 if you really want a cool phone. Once I'm rich I'm gonna buy me one.
