Crashing iPod software

Everytime I use iTunes to update my iPod, it crashes. It's pretty irritating.
I have the system in my sig (stable system), and an iPod Mini.
I get a "cannot be synced" error message partway through every upload attempt. It even wiped the entire memory of my iPod once. Only through repeated trail and error and chopping files up into smaller tracks can I upload. Uploading a CD will take over an hour.

Any ideas?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes?

Have you used a registry cleaner on the off chance that something is lurking in there?

When did this problem first occur, and what did you install or alter previous to this problem cropping up?

Thanks for the reply.

-Nope. Will try that, although I assume I'll lose all my presets?
-Don't want to mess with the reg unless I know what I'm looking for. Been down that slippery slope before.
-Not sure exactly, but it has always been a bit buggy since I got it a couple years ago.

How fast should the upload be anyway?

You would probably lose all your presets yes.

The transfer rate is USB 2.0, so expect it to move quite quickly. Mine can transfer my entire 20GB library in just a few minutes

What does this mean? Are you implying that you are surprised at his surprise at iTunes crashing?

If that is the case then, why would you say that?

I just reinstaled iTunes. I also used CCleaner to clean up as much as I could. Will test out the iPod when I have time soon. BTW, it has a firewire.
CCleaner found what looks like an odd entry in in Startup. It has no description of any kind (other than the standard HKLM:Run under the "Key" heading) , just blank. Is that normal? I have no idea what it is.

Sorry for the delay, I had to finish listening to some lectures before risking losing them by connecting the iPod.
Anyway, as mentioned I reinstalled itunes and totaly cleaned the reg etc with CCleaner.
I just uploaded a small CD to the iPod. It (iTunes) locked up on the first try for a few minitues, and them became responsive again with an error message about being unable to sync the ipod. The ipod dissapeared, so I physicaly un/replugged it, and after a delay, it popped up again. The second attempt worked, taking exactly 3 minitues to upload.
Is that normal time? And any idea what the seeming spurious reg entry is?

everyone stumped?
Is it possible it's a MB issue, trouble with PnP devices? I know this MB can be difficult for stuff like that.

One of my friends had an issue where iTunes would lock up whenever he tried to sync his library. His library was huge though and he had well over 80 GB of music. It was rectified in a future update.

My only thought would be for the iPod.

- Have you tried "Reinitializing" it, or whatever the word is for returning it to it's default settings and then upload your library again?
- Have you tried plugging it into a different computer and seeing if it still has that issue?

If you don't have access to another computer, then I'm not sure what else to try. 🙁

-did the "reset" thing on the iPod a couple of times.
-will have to try on another PC if I can get one. I have a sneaky suspicion it is my MB being weird again. My MB locks up and gets dangerous if I have more than 2 HDs.
