I have a package coming on Monday, but I won't be home to sign for it. I have requested UPS hold the package at the facility and I will pick it up. Turns out this request causes a 1 day delay. How the fuck does not putting a package on the truck for delivery cause a 1 day delay. So I decided to a cancel the request, and now I am informed any cancellation of holding the package will cause an ADDITIONAL 1 day delay. If I cancel the package won't be delivered until WEDNESDAY. Seriously, WTF.

Seriously WTF, why is their a 1 day delay to hold a package, and why is their an additional 1 day delay to cancel a hold.

Stupid UPS.

It's not a 1 day delay, they are required to attempt a delivery first before they can hold the package. So they will attempt the delivery and when it doesn't get accepted they will then hold it at the facility.

Not sure about the other old you're talking about. Have you called and spoken to more than one person?

No they are NOT required to attempt a first delivery. UPS now allows packages to be redirected and held. IT STATES VERY CLEARLY THERE WILL NO DELIVERY ATTEMPT, THE PACKAGE WILL BE HELD. I spoke with multiple people it now impossible to get a first delivery attempt without causing more delays to my package.

It seems the issue is when a request is made it stops the movement of the package. Each request causes as 1 day stop in movement.

First it isn't pulling a package out of millions, it is simply not putting it on the truck for delivery, and why should a cancellation of the request add more delay, should the delay go away when I cancel the request.

How do you not put it on the truck without separating it from the millions? The request put a process in motion. The cancellation is but another request that must now be put into motion. Quit whining.

Not sure why people still use UPS. They charge that idiotic brokerage fee on top of regular fees, plus they manhandle your stuff. A shop owner I know used to use them to import stuff from the States. Every shipment would have at least one damaged package. Switched to FedEx and hasn't had a problem.

I suspect that taking the package out of the regular delivery schedule, and moving it to an area to be picked up, is more complicated than the OP realizes.

Apparently they needed find my item in transit, place a note on the box so the destination facility will know not to attempt the first deliver, this caused a delay. In order to undo this request, they must find the box again and remove that note, that will cause another delay.

My main complaint with UPS and most package delivery services is that they try to deliver at home during work hours. Of course nobody is home, they're at work! They should do business deliveries during the day then have a late shift starting at like 6 to do home deliveries. And if nobody is home don't keep trying, maybe that person works shifts and wont be there for the 2 next times again. Put the slip and keep the package at the depot so it can be picked up the next day.

What I do now when I order stuff is I actually put the address of the Purolator office (they told me I can do that). That way it gets delivered there and they call me and I can pick it up. I find it's faster that way.

I remember a popular Youtube video some months ago showing a Fedex driver tossing an LCD monitor over a person's gate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--4U4BkulC0 - yeah Fedex is clearly better than UPS at delivering packages.

At least they did not lose your touchpad off the truck.....:'(

I have lost all faith in UPS and these companies need to stop using them.

If the item is already on the truck; they are not going to try to find it and hold the truck.
truck comes back in; package is then taken to the pickup area.

You change your mind; the package goes from the pickup area back to the truck for the following day run.

If you want to intercept a package; best to request before it shows up at the delivery station.

I am in California, the package was in Kansas when I requested it. It still hasn't arrived in California yet. That is what I didn't understand, why the package has to be delayed when the request was made right after it was shipped out. Apparently any intercept request causes the movement of the package to be delayed.

They say it'll be a day, but you normally get it same day if you've put your request in before your package arrives in your town. Best thing I've knoticed is to swap it to your a UPS Store, ours is open 24/7 so I get it on Saturday.

Since Jerboy hasn't posted on here in years, I think it's time to start a DCal430 list of all his problems.

I used to work for UPS. I have no idea why a hold would delay a package an extra day.

When I was there holds worked one of two ways.
1. The package is flagged for hold in the system. When the local center scans it on receipt they slap a label on it indicating which belt, truck and shelf it goes on (you'll see them on the package, usually they say something like 32A-3500). The flag changes that label to a hold label so the package is sorted to the center's hold trailer.
2. If the request comes in later after the center has sort it, they will send someone out to pull it off of the truck.

TL;DR, I don't see why it would take extra time unless the request comes in after the truck has left.

The efficiencies and costs savings for UPS come from a standard automated process that handles each package the same way. They don't build a system to be stream lined around exceptions or people that constantly change their mind.
