so, the stock cooler is not able to keep... cool! .. getting temps 65c+ and hardware monitor alerts and sudden system shutdowns is upon me! .. So looking to replace it with something real..

like

Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Revision C

http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/thulex.html

Any objections? I should be good to go right? On an asus rampage formula motherboard...

Maybe i can even get back to overclocking with this one!!

thats a good one, yes - all intel stock coolers suck. as soon as i opened my intel box, i pulled out the cooler and threw it over my left shoulder, its good luck also.

uhmm.. if you're running stock, the included HSF is more than adequate.
if you OC, which it looks like you are according to ur sig, of course you'd want something better.

The stock HSF is made for stock voltage/speed, not over-volted/clocked speeds.

That said, some stock coolers are better than others. As long as the stock cooler keeps the stock settings running, it is adequete. These are a cost for the company, so why wouldn't they try to cut costs to keep them down?

Bottom-line: Pay to play. If you want to overclock, get better cooling.

I run that heatsink on my 9450
I'm really happy with it, I run the cpu slightly undervolted/overclocked and the temps are reasonable 50-60c(assuming ambient temps aren't too high).

I agree. Megahalems works better to keep it cool and the mounting is much more solid to the board. They're close, but for the same price I think it's a no brainer.

They have MX-3 now which is even better. lol

I've used AS5 for years and just ran out so I'm using MX3 now since it's supposed to be the greatest stuff. I don't know how much a difference it really makes.

Update: the megahelms are now installed and my signature is once again correct. temps are, well sort of weird, hardware monitor reporting something like

51
37
36
36

Celcius for each core. 51 is never moving but the other three are. They are around 40 under load.

From ~70 idle at stock undervolted to ~40 under load overclocked. Nice.

By the way, that megahelms is one BIG .... i guess now i know why its named mega.

Sounds like you have at least one stuck sensor, I have four of them.
