crappy service at a tire shop - weak rant

I needed to get an alignment on my Jetta after putting new tie rod ends, ball joints, struts, strut mounts, lowering springs, lower control arm bushings, etc on the front of my car. I also needed 2 new tires.

The local shop had a deal going on. Buy two tires, get a free alignment. I went in, got the two tires put on, and they called me later. Said they couldn't do the alignment because my car had been in some sort of horrible accident at some point and I had severe toe in of 2 degrees on the drivers front. They said it was adjusted out fully and still couldnt make it right. They gave me the name of a frame shop a few miles away and I picked up the car and paid for the tires.

I made an appointment back in Lawrence for this morning instead and took it to a closer shop to my house. They found nothing wrong with the frame (surprise surprise, I didn't see anything either), and were able to center my steering wheel, do the alignment, (I watched them), and provided before and after alignment specs. Was told there was plenty of threads on the tie rods to do an alignment and that the front end hadn't been touched. I was pissed.

What to do next? I don't really have much to gain by going back to the first shop and bitching at them. I also don't think they did a good job balancing my tires as the wheel has vibrations consistent with a bad balance at 60 mph and above. The alignment was free, but they couldnt perform it and it caused me to have to pay for one. They lied about the toe in issue and possibly being in a wreck.. So mad, not sure what to do though. I could go back to the shop, ask them to rebalance the tires (should have no problem doing so), and show them the results from the good alignment I had done today, but really, what am I going to gain?

My alignment today cost me $65.25 after tax.

You'd be wasting your time and frustration going back to them. Now you know in the future though not to go there.

Ask the second shop to re-balance the tires as well, chances are the first shop screwed that up as well.

Could try calling one of the local TV stations. They always love doing a story about scams.

I did. Its $11.00/tire, but they can't get me in until next Tuesday.

I need to get this done in the next couple days.

Because the previous owner didn't believe in maintenance. 115k miles on the car, original everything (Except brakes). I bought it cheap knowing I'd replace these things. Still have the lower timing chain to swap out.

Somewhat related story.. I had the place that did my alignment tell me they couldnt adjust camber or toe on my car "because its a Volkswagen"..

After 10 minutes of arguing I pulled up the tech specs and showed them how to do it. Apparently people working at some of these places are too dumb/lazy to know what they're doing

Sounds like a scam. I'd go back and let them know that you know. Technically, they owe you whatever they normally charge for an alignment, imo.

*shrug*

At 115K, my Accord was still original everything except rear brakes. I finally swapped pads for the fronts at 120K but it didn't need it. Dampers and bushings are still in decent shape at 174K.

Previous owner may not have maintained the car, but if it wasn't a VW, it wouldn't have needed those things maintained in the first place. :)

Free alignment means you got what you paid for...nothing, lol. The whole "your frame is bent take it to by buddies shop" thing would piss me the hell off too though. Fortunately you were smart and took it to another place not looking to rip you off. I'd hate to see what they'd work a little old lady over for that doesn't know any better. Shit heads.

Best thing you can do is file a complaint with BBB and the attorney general's office and see if they're on resellerratings.com and tear them up. A long shot would be submitting your story to one of those Shame On You segments of the local news. This is right up their alley. They could do an under cover segment and see if they could catch them in the act. They are very obviously scam artists.

Boots were cracked on my tie rod ends, both of them. I wanted to replace my LCA bushings and shock tower bushings/bearings as well. I bought a kit from ECSTuning.com that had those parts plus ball joints for less than what the individual parts would cost. My balljoints I took off weren't bad, but since I had new ones, I put them on.

I will never again trust any "free" service when it comes to my vehicles... Midas didn't re-tighten the lugs on my front left wheel last year after a "free brake check". Luckily I realized what it was before the wheel fell off.

We got this midwest franchise in Michigan called Belle Tire. They used to be great with good prices and great service. Now they also do mechanic service so every time you go in there, its the end of the world and you need to get x amount of service done or your car is dangerous. Went from a tire shop to a shady mechanic. Pissed me off so I just go to discount tire now.

It was Gregg Tire in Topeka on 6th street.

This is the coupon I used. Says its expired, but the manager said he would honor it and its still valid, they just never changed the date on it.

They were also heavily pushing nitrogen instead of compressed air, claiming a 25% increase in mileage. hmm:\:\:\

Go back and calmly explain the situation to a manager and tell him/her exactly what happened. They should know if their employees are lying/idiots/whatever.
