Crappy GTA III performance

I remember reading an article in PC Gamer about GTA III being ran on a PIII 677MHZ computer with a Geforce 3 video card at 1600X1200 and I'm think how in the hell could you run GTA III at a resolution like that? I can barely run it a 1280X1024 on my P4 1.7GHZ system with a Radeon 9800pro in it. I also tried running GTA III on a PIII 1GHZ system with a Radeon 9800PRo but no dice (not frame rates to what I expected). I can run GTA III at 1280X1024 with good framerates on my rig below but I don't understand what would require GTA III to have such a high system? Is there something the PC Gamer guys did to make it run smoothly? They never specified the frame rates but claimed it ran, "with out a hitch".

Running GTA III on a 666 MHz P-iii with a GF3 sounds like a load of horseshit to me.
I guess you could, but unless you're on of those people who keep insisting Half Life 2 runs perfectly smooth on your 9800 at 1600x1200, 4xAA & 8xAF, it's gonna be painful.

That said, GTA III is a horrible performer considering it's graphics IMO, much like many other console ports.

Yup, I agree, that has to be total BS. I had an Nvidia 128MB Geforce 4 ti4200 (along with P4 2.4C and 1gb ddr333), and it was a little choppy at 10x7 when it rained. At 16x12, it was like a slide show.

I will say that now with my new rig (P4 3.2C, 1024 ddr, 256 x800pro) it runs like butter at 16x12 with 6xAA and 16xAF, and it looks awesome.
