my question is...why don't you want to wear gap clothes? its not like its so much you'll have a gap wardrobe..just a few items. and gap is the most non descript clothing i can think of. Anyone from a baby to 100 years old can wear that stuff. I mean how threatening can plain khakis, jeans, or a solid color t-shirt be?

its the principle of being shacked to the establishment

or something like that. i'm not particularly a fan of designer stuff.

Gap sells extremely cheap clothes if you find the sales. Keep it and buy some nice clothes.

gift cert is the SAME as cash in their minds, demand cash for the certificate, and if they refuse start making a scene... they ALWAYS cave in, I'v done it a few time and so have various people I know... never at the gap though..... If you start talking loudly and making other customers in the store turn around and look at you, they'll get concerned, don't let them take you to another room, stay in the lobby around all the other customers.

so a solid blue t-shirt, white socks, and/or a black belt qualify as "designer stuff"? And unless you walk around naked or grow your own cotton and manufacture your own clothes, face the music, you're already "shacked".

I'm not saying i'm a gap fanatic, but seems to me this guys relatives appeared to do the smart thing in buying a nice gift certificate to a store where rap artists, teenagers, conservatives, lesbians, and lion tamers can all find something they like. I mean, where is he going to spend $100 in clothes at instead of the gap?
