Crappy Espon scanner software... alternatives?

I am running Espson Smart Panel v 1.03A with a new Epson Perfection 1640SU scanner. I am having problems with the copy portion of the software, in connection with running Adobe Acrobat 4.0. Additionally I find that Smart Panel frequently crashes and often requires several reboots in order to do a complete scan. To me, the performance of Smart Panel is unacceptable and therefore leads me to question the wisdom of my purchase of an Epson scanner. Does anyone know of an alternative scanning software package that will work with the Epson Perfection 1640SU with better results?

If you want to scan into a PDF, why not just use adobe? I believe you can scan straight in, pics and character rec., make it searchable then save.

Otherwise, what are you wanting to accomplish?
