well, that plus the fact that I might just win you a new one :D
Well I'll take a free one any day:)

40GB WD HD
120GB Seagate HD
1x broken CD-RW (haven't bothered to take it out yet)

edit: ok, so it' not my main rig. but it was 3 years ago.

Same cpu but with 128MB RAM
Voodoo 5500
60GB Seagate HD
52X CD-RW

I installed windows xp in it and it runs like ass but my mom uses it to check her email and browse the web and she's fine with it.
xp with 128 of RAM?! yeah screw that. When i got my new rig i moved that bastard to linux, and made it a samba server. works great at running torrents and file serving 24/7. used to crash all the time on Win98, now it's rock solid. When i get the energy gonna go to OpenBSD.

My computer is a little bit better than the OPs:

AthlonXP 2000+
1GB RAM
GeForce 4 Ti 4200
200GB hdd
SB Live

ummm, that's about all I can remember. I built it when I graduated high school 4 years ago.

Blazing fast PC's are overrated unless you are editing video heavily or are a hardcore gamer.

HA!

You want to know pain? My desktop was out of commission for two months, do you know what I was using during that time, as my main PC, as a computer science student who uses their computer pretty much all day?

IBM Thinkpad t20
PIII 650MHz
128MB RAM
10GB HD (4200rpm)

Try running WindowsXP on something like that, and get ready for true pain.

Athlon XP 1800+
1.5 GB pc2700 DIMM
GeForce 3
1x 120 GB Western Digital HD
1x 80 GB Maxtor
Sony DVD ROM
Mashita 12x CDRW

Users of "ancient" hardware represent your rigs.

Pentium Pro overclocked to 225mhz, ram=192megs PC100 SIMM, matrox g400 16meg video, floppy drive, in a AT (not ATX) case.

Does Win98 and web FINE!

1x27GB Hard Drive
GeForce4 MX420 Video Card
Internal CD/RW
External CD/RW

That's ALMOST exactly like my computer. Dell Dimension 4500, weaker processor, same ram, same video card (before I upgraded), and almost the same drives. We did get a good deal on our HD though.

see my laptop specs in my sig :D

You can get a really cheap s.939 machine nowadays.

I agree, get a cheap cpu/mobo combo and a nice mid range video card and your set, even your PC2700 ram will still work well with it.

If you must play and have two grand burning a hole in your pocket build a new conroe rig. But unless you do some serious CPU intense stuff on your computer, the increase in performance from a decent 939 system to a conroe system definately won't be worth the price difference from $300 to $2000
I'm so out of touch with hardware since I haven't had money to spend on it for so long. Anyone care to link a recommended 939? I feel like I should know where to look but I don't. :(

The best etailers to look at
Newegg
Mwave
Monarch
ZipZoomFly
Tank Guys

939 Motherboards I like
Epox 9NPA ultra
Asus A8NE
DFI ultra D
MSI neo4

really cheap but decent
Asrock sata II
ECS extreme
biostar

Many of the etailers sell "combos" with motherboard and CPU installed and tested, you can usually save a few dollars as compared to buying them seperately and they even throw in free games or goodies sometimes.

Cheap but powerful enough CPU's
Sempron 3100+
A64's 3200,3500,3700
