Crappy 2d performance w/Radeon LE

I recently got a Radeon LE, and while I am quite amazed by the 2d quality, for some reason, I am getting bad 2d performance in diablo2. When there are a lot of guys on the screen, or when spells are being cast, the framerate drops to the floor. I have a t-bird 1.33ghz, so i dont think the cpu is the problem. also, my radeon has hyper-z enabled and is oc'ed to 166/166. any explanations why this is happening?

yah i know it uses direct3d, but isnt that for the lighting only?

besides, all other games of mine that use direct3d run very smoothly even at max settings

still no dice :(

not only is the image quality crappy under software, but it still gets really jerky when a lot of guys were on

note: this never happened when i had my voodoo5... i constantly had fps in the triple digits

its already off :(
i even tried turning off blended shadows and putting lighting quality to low, but it doesnt seem to help at all

im going to install the beta radeon drivers and see if that helps.

doesnt diablo 2 have glide still or something or another for voodoo? I haven tplayed it in a hwile..i remember it running awesome under voodoo but not so hot under other cards.

Man you should play baldur's gate if you want a game that is choppy..sheesh. Diablo 2 is smooth as silk comparitively.

yes, it can run glide, and thats what i ran when i had my voodoo5 in.

when in, say, rogue encampment with my voodoo, i got over 300fps, but with radeon i get only about 40

<< yes, im using latest official drivers. should i try beta? >>

I'd say it's worth trying beta, it could help and if not you can always revert back to the official drivers.
From what I've hard the DX support in Diablo 2 is very minimal and extremely poor though.
I've heard of people having issues with low frame rates in that game even with a GF3.

With a bit of tweaking of the settings it runs beautifully on my system with basically everything maxed out.
I did notice it absolutely loves to have a lot of RAM to cache to though.

Yep, i have Diablo 2 and my Radeon got the -exact- same fps as my old TNT1. I don't think its being used at all, imo, since counterstrike was faster; its all about processor speed. As soon as my new heat sink gets in i can assemble my new comp to test this theory regarding that game ^^

<< baldur's gate 2 can't be tweaked to perform "THAT" good hahah!!! >>

There is quite a bit you can do to tweak it, and while it can be tough on a system I don't see it to be as harsh as you seem to have experienced with the game.
It runs beautifully for me, and looking at your system specs you have a better system then I.

Direct3d Implementation in Diablo2 sucks. Whenever I run my Radeon LE & G2Pro Computers in Direct 3d, the framerate goes down to the single digits. When I run it in DirectDraw however, i get constant 40 fps +. However, DirectDraw makes it look very bland. On the other hand my weakest system(a P3 700 with 256 MB ram) runs a voodoo5. The Glide runs very smooth and the game/lighting looks the best. Blizzard has gotten many emails about these complaints, and in the future I hope they make Diablo2 run better in Direct3d for us Nvidia & ATI card owners.

If you remember Blizzard was planning on making the game Glide only - lucky for them they added D3d before 3dfx cratered and all games became d3d. Nonetheless i think the d3d component is less mature or just plain tacked on, and theyve been very quiet regarding framerates. I wish they had used the expansion to improve d3d capabilities, but ce sera, sera.
