I hooked up my notebook to the stereo and tried to play some songs. I wanted to check how high I could crank the speakers and it started to hiss very high for about 3 seconds and now, when I change the balance from one speaker to another, there are no "highs" from one speaker. Could it be that I just blew a fuse or something? Those are some old-school Revox speakers, about 80cm high and really big. Any chance that I could fix that?

Sounds like you blew the tweeter in one of them. BTW speakers don't have fuses.

Yea, I realize that now, but I didn't realize that 8 or so years ago when I used to work at Best Buy where I bought them. At least I got a nice discount on them :)

Yes....I know for a fact that some speakers (mostly old school and/or high end speakers) come with fuses/breakers for upper frequencies. I have an old pair (25+ years old) of 'Sonics' that have such a setup. They also have high frequency settings for attenuation or accentuation.

SDC

PS: Unless you have some kind of breaker/fuse in those old Revox's....you most likely blew a crossover or the tweeter itself. :(

Better speakers have fuses and entirely reasonable to put one on for situations just like this. The sub on my altec lansing PC speakers has a fuse. Also, some speaker's I've built have fuses.

You should be able to fix your speakers with a new tweeter. The sound will be mismatched buy with cheaper speakers, you may not notice too much anyway. On second thought, unless you know what you're doing, you should just get new speakers.

Using my awesome over the internet circuit board/Banana density analyzer, I can see that your fuse needs replacing.

Altec Lansing is "better speakers"? LOL, no.

the rest of your post? eh buy with cheaper speakers?

Cerwin Wega is ok for home use, it's a step below the REALLY expensive speakers that none of you have and most of your somewhat more expensive speakers are usually not as good.

He blew the tweeter, i would replace both tweeters with same spec tweeters (that is, not only the spec, the same reference too. (as in, they are mounted in similar speakers)

The fuse won't blow because of high frequency overload, and if it was blown the speaker would be entirely quiet.

I have done something similar, i had to open the speaker and reattach the cable to the tweeter, it had fallen of somehow, if that is it, use a soldering iron and attach that sucker for good.

Lol, sorry, I don't think those speaker would match the sound of the current ones. The current ones aren't "computer speakers". They're real big old-school speakers with MUCH better sound than ANY computer speakers :)

Klixxer: I gonna check that sometime when my dad isn't around ;) Could it be that the cable fell of cuz of the high frequencies or was your situation a coincidence?

ndee-- it's possible that the wire got jostled loose from the contact from pumping too much from the tweeter. Hopefully this is this case, and you can just sauder it back on. Good luck.

In regards to the altec's...i don't think the speaker itself has a fuse, but rather the amp in the sub has a fuse so in case of surges, the amp doesn't get blown. *i think*
