If I drop it in the mailbox by the post office tomorrow night, will it be postmarked the 15th?

OP is in Hawaii.... maybe he was up really late last night. Like... until 7:00 a.m.

If you want it to be postmarked by the 15th, call your post office and see how late they're open. Most are open later today.

Do you expect to owe or get a refund? You can file for an automatic 6 month extension. If you expect to owe, you have to send in a reasonable estimate of how much you expect to owe. There are penalties for underpayment.

Filing for the extension is easy. The form has all of about 6 fields and a few pages of instructions. :p

Most post offices stay open until midnight tonight (for tax time) if I remember correctly, at least they still take packages and will postmark for today.

Not sure, but do you still get penalized if you are getting a refund??

If you didn't have any taxable income, do you need to file?

I've put it off thinking exactly that, but now that's its the due date... I just don't want to have been wrong and have the bastards at the IRS bitching that they didn't get a file... yet, no taxable income, what's the point?
All I've received is federal/military stipends, which are not taxable. Didn't get them taxed last year.

And the taxes are only for stocks sold during last year, correct? As in, I've only bought and sold taxes since something after January 1st, so that won't be dealt with until next tax season, yes?

You don't NEED to file, but it may be in your best interest to file. For example, last year there were $300-$600 checks written to most people who filed taxes for Bush's stimulus plan. If you didn't file taxes, then the IRS didn't know to send you a check. Sure, you got your $300-$600 if you filed taxes a year later, but why wait that year? You can only harm yourself by not filing. And with no income, you can telefile which took all of 5 minutes last time I did it.

In some cases, stipends are taxable. That might not apply to you though.

Yes, the tax is due when you sell your assets.

Post offices here will NOT be open late although they used to assign people to collect tax returns outside of larger post offices up until midnight. They were all over the radio this morning warning people not to assume they have until midnight.

Their advice was to get it done so you get it to a dropoff box BEFORE the last pickup of the day. Getting it to a dropoff box by midnight isn't good enough. The problem is the only way to know when the last pickup of the day is, is to physically look at the schedule on the dropoff box.

Well... there have always been qualifiers with those stimulus checks. I've never gotten one, as just being a college student during the last one, and working over the summer... I didn't make the $3000.
I have my stipend and whatnot, and combined received more, but it had to be $3000 taxable income.
So... no taxable income last year, whatsoever, definitely won't be getting a dime.
