crap on cpu, how to clean?

Use acetone to melt and remove the thermal pad, then use a pencil eraser to simply "erase" anything left behind...
 
alcohol...or goo gone. Sometimes alcohol just doesn't cut it, especially with those putty-like pads.
 
Regular drugstore Isopropyl Alcohol is not pure and leaves a residue. Audio Tape head cleaner is better.

Now that Radio Shack has discontinued the Foam Swabs, now what the heck can I use that leaves no residue? Don't tell me Q-tips, they leave lint.

they will work, but they leave residue. i have some 97% swabs. but to remove the residue, you'll want something better.
