Crap on a poop! We gots mouses in the attic!!

No Lifer
In the process of moving, we are discovering all kinds of crap about the house we wish we didnt know.
Apparently the fiber glass insulation installed in Virginia homes 18 years ago was very attractive to rodents. Nowadays they use mouse-repellent insulation, and thats what we're going to be using tomorrow when the guys replace it all.

The mice have decided not to enter the home proper, as the attic has everything they need. But we are going to massacre them regardless.

If you havent been to your attic lately, I recommend you do a check and see what sort of beasties have been hanging out there.

I get the odd one in mine too, I really need to figure out how they're getting in. It's hard though as I only get like 1-2 per year. Otherwise I'd try to rent a FLIR and just set it outside to record different parts of the house until I can dial in how they're getting in.

It's a pain going up to the attic because I have to move all the stuff out of the spare bedroom closet to get to the hatch, so I put some monitored mouse traps. 2 of the 3 alarm points have been active for a few years, suppose I should check them, and add fresh peanut butter while I'm at it.

This is what the setup looks like:

When trap goes off it breaks the foil which sets off the alarm.

You could just put a bright flood light in the space, keep it on permanently, spray some vinegar/cayenne pepper solution in various spots in the attic daily, and they will just abandon the place. Works for rodents, possums, raccoons, etc.

Animals nest where they find conditions tolerable. A quick, cheap, easy fix is to simply make it intolerable and they will leave. Also, snakes are at least as effective as cats for dealing with rodent problems.
