Our city is in the process of installing red light cameras. For the most part I am fine with this...I can't make a strong case against them anyway.

BUT, today I read in the paper that, as part of the deal, they also signed up a van to cruise the area looking for speeders.

This I do have more of a problem with. For the most part, speeding can be justified by various reasons with little remorse or potential victim if the driver doing so is able and has a suitable vehicle (I like to think I fall in this category). But, having a van floating around acting like mommy with a ray gun is...just...suck.

Anyone here get busted by one of these contraptions?

Making a case against red light cameras is extremely easy. It has been shown that intersections with longer yellow lights have fewer accidents. Everything else just falls into place.

As for the van, just watch for a competently driven minivan (almost an oxymoron), and you're likely to be safe.

What's the difference between a radar van and a regular cop sitting by the side of the road with a radar/laser gun?

Wouldn't the Radar vans fall into the same category as the red light cameras? Where if you actually bother to go to court over them they get thrown out because it's still illegal to give tickets that add points to a license unless it's done by a LEO?

I'd have to dig to find it but I sure as hell know one state over (Iowa) you can just go to court and it's thrown out because they're illegal statewide.

Get around red light cameras with a monkey mask. See fi the law requires a picture of thd rvier and the plates. Apparently somebody in arizona skipped 39 tickets by driving with a mask on.

That's why red light camera tickets are a civil fine only, and no points.

interesting...this is in Cedar Rapids Iowa.
The thing is, we don't have a points system. or at least it's not referred to that way.

1. Find it parked
2. Install GPS locating device
3. Put information on internet
4. ???
5. Profit!

Molotov.

Or the British tactic of a burning tired filled with gasoline. http://www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2.htm

Fortunately in AZ everyone is against them including the politicians and they are about to become banned soon, so no need to remind them of the spirit of resistance just yet. Napalitano single handedly started the whole camera thing here in Arizona on executive order after some of the companies sold her on the revenue potential. They've cost far far more than they've brought in though. I forget the real numbers, but it was something like spending 100 million to make up to 500 million and they only got 10 million from it. AZ congress was against it when Napalitano set it into motion, the totalitarian bitch.

Sad thing is I'm a fairly responsible driver, but these things make me peel out after I pass them just on general principal.

i picked up an Escort Passport 8500 about 4 years ago and use it everytime I'm driving. Saved my butt numerous times speeding around town.

A good detector like the Escort Passport of Valentine 1 is well worth the money if you like to speed a lot.
