just a little notice for all of you who don't know this already.....

I ordered for $600 hardware on a site, and today I got a bill of around $160 tax from the tax-managing-thingie-place in my country 🙁 damn I didn't know about this 🙁

oh well, it's still been cheaper than buying it here.....

Oh, you live in the UK right? For a while there I wasn't sure what the hell you were talking about. I don't think anything like that happens here in the US.

check my profile.....Denmark has a 25% damn on this kinda stuff :| they tax like mad here......oh well I still love this place 🙂

In New Zealand there is a 15% tax. But you can get away with it if you get the retailer to write 'gift' on it

Same here in Iceland, sucks, after the tax the prices are around the same here as ordering online but if you buy it at a local store you can never find the newest products. But I think you can get a GeForce2 GTS cheaper on the net, they were selling it here for around $490.

I've heard of outrageous shipping charges too, but maybe we're talking about the same things here, just how they're collected.

It is not as bad living in Canada, unless you get your stuff shipped UPS. I ordered some acoustic sheets from mcmastercarr and without my permission they shipped second day air and charged me $46. But the real bummer was that UPS sent me a bill for $100 in "brokerage fees" to get it across the border. Oh ya, the acoustic sheets only cost $22. 🙁

Also with the tax thing the Canadian customs will charge GST (7%) on stuff crossing the border, unless it is labelled as a gift.

The other crappy thing about shipping gifts across a border is there is a limit on the value. For example, the maximum allowd gift value to ship from Canada to the UK is like $75CDN, and I think it's about $100CDN to ship to the US.

Because of their brokerage fees, I reported UPS the the Better Business Bureau in the US. The BBB investigated it promptly, and to their credit UPS called me back shortly thereafter. They pointed me towards where the brokerage fee schedule is listed on their website. I did find it but I told them that until they more clearly displayed the information that I would not recommend UPS to anyone living in Canada. The UPS rep was quite polite and curteous though, and understood my position. She said they were considering revamping the Canadian section of the website, but so far I have seen no real change.

I don't think UPS is a truly dishonest company, but I felt that in this instance, they deserved to have a file on record with the BBB.

Prodigy^: That's what I was afraid of. 🙁 Remember how I asked you before? Darn it, there goes my order to Sweden. 🙁
