[Frustrated rant]
I just bought the JVC XM-R70 MiniDisc player from the local store after reading a bunch of good reviews about it on several MD websites but when I brought it back, I just realized it's missing two important features.

1) It can only record in normal mode (my fault for assuming all MD recorders can record LP2 and LP4... I should have checked the specs when I was doing my research online);
2) It's using a different kind of optical cable than the one on the SB Audigy's external rack!!! Aaarrrgh!!!
[/Frustrated rant]

I don't mind the normal recording mode (my fault for being ignorant), but is there a proper optical cable to connect it to my Audigy's external rack? Where can I get one? One major problem for me is that since I'm from Malaysia, many online stores don't ship internationally so hopefully there'll be a store that does.

Oh BTW, for those who haven't seen one, the optical input on the MD is a regular 1/8" stereo jack, while the one on the Audigy's external rack is some square-ish connector with a small, cylindrical tube in the middle that emits the light.

Thanks in advance,
:)atwl

There is not one cable that can connect the two. The samll one is fiber optic and the other one is not. You may be out of luck.

Is the one that looks like a 1/8" jack orange?

What you want is one of these... THESE (model ILS100TM-1M)

BTW, AFAIK all minidisc players use mini-optical plugs. BTW, I'm surprised JVC doesn't supply you with an optical cable, Sony gave me one with the minidisc I bought 2 years ago.

PS: I'm sure you can find equivalent cables from other companies that are cheaper, Monster Cables are always overpriced.

Thanks for the tip, icecool83. Now at least I have something to search for. Believe it or not, I didn't know there were two different types of heads on an optical cable until now! :Q

Are you SURE it's a standard 1/8" jack? My Sony MD recorder has a dual purpose jack. A TOSlink cable came with the recorder, it's got a squarish end and a 1/8" end that emits the light. I can use either in my recorder's jack, it detects them accordingly.

On a side note, I really miss my Xitel soundcard that had the toslink output on it. Wish I could have gotten that to work in 2k :(

hey if you need one of those cables, I can sell you one. My GF's MD got stolen on her visit to LA this summer - it's the only piece left. It's got the square optical end to a regular 1/8" jack.

go get a toslink cable from the Wiz for $10. i have the same connector on my MD player/recorder. it has a 1/8" for the device and the standard connector for hooking it up to another toslink device.

Adrian Tung,
I'm sure you can get the cable thing sorted out and I don't really think you'll miss the MDLP. It's nice but not necessary. Enjoy your mindisc player! MD ROCKS!!!

The cable you need came with my Creative I/O Card. Am surprised it didn't come with an Audigy! Shouldn;t any HIFI store have them?

Thanks but I think it'll be a big hassle to handle the transaction internationally. I'll try some other option first.

My Audigy did not come with an optical cable. My DTT3500 speakers did, however, but both ends were square. I use this cable to connect my Audigy's external rack to the DTT3500.

Anyway, since I now know what to look for, I'll check out the hifi stores to see if they have any. Thanks for the replies.
