Crap...I think my SSD is dead

CAW!

Banned disgusting troll
Should we post
your
So I go to reboot my computer today, and it hangs on the starting windows screen (win 7). Just hangs there for like 20 minutes. So I reboot, and I get an error message about needing bootable media or something. I check, all cables are secure, it has power, so I go into my bios, and under SATA1 (where the SSD is) it says JM Loader 001, and a size of 4.2 GB.....It's a PQI S525. Yes I know it's an off-brand. I wanted to give a shot, and I got a year out of it. But am I pretty much boned now? I didn't have anything I particularly wanted to save on the drive, so any and all suggestions are welcome for how to get this thing working again.

1. under warranty? (credit card or manufacturer)? if so file claim
2. wait or buy new ssd
3. restore backup

Could also be a virus or something killed your boot sector/partition. Possible. I've never heard of that off-brand though so I can't speak for any reliability they have. If you have another machine, it might be worth throwing it in and seeing if you can see anything in the drive management options. But worst case, you should have a backup so you can restore your system with a new drive.

it seems your drive has dropped into "factory mode," possibly due to firmware being corrupted.

happens to different SSDs from different manufacturers but (I believe) all have a jmicron controller. some say they recovered the drive by re flashing the firmware. others tried that with no joy, but its worth a shot.

hit up PQIs web site, grab the latest firmware, and see what happens.

real issue is why did the firmware become corrupted.. power glitch? on its way out?

The drive never was that fast anyway, and always had little hangups every now and then. I checked PQI's website, and all it had for support was a PDF file advertising the model lol. It's prolly not a power issue; it's on a surge suppressor.

I'm just going to get a quality 32GB SSD and just run WIN7 off it. I'll call it an xmas present to myself. Time to make another thread lol

If you're getting yourself a new one, might as well drop for at least a 64GB drive. It'd be less painful managing it to ensure adequate amount of space, and you'd also be able to install some often used programs like Office on it.

With SSD density, patch & program sizes only going up in the future, you'd be better off & prepared with a larger drive at least through 2012. If the world hasn't ended by that time, you can reward yourself with a 256GB one.
