I screwed up and ordered an OEM drive when I should have ordered a retail one. So now, I need to find software. I have used CDBurnerXP for burning stuff in the past (its freeware) but it doesn't do lightscribe.

Can anyone recommend something that BURNS and does LIGHTSCRIBE ONLY? I don't want all this crap that comes with Nero now. I want burning software - not DVD authoring software, etc.

It arrived today, and that's when I realize I screwed up. I'm going to assemble stuff tomorrow, so I would be losing shipping 2 ways on a $35 device, which sucks, plus the time delay and having to delay the system integration.

"Crap"? I always try to order OEM hardware if I can, much cheaper and doesn't come with all the bloatware usually in the retail versions.

here's a suggestion, use whatever you use to use to burn, and go to Lightscribe's web site and download Sure Thing 4 LE, it only does labels, but it does a fantastic job and isn't bloated. If you absolutely need to burn and do Lightscibe in the same program. You can do a custom install of Nero and get rid of all the programs you don't want. It won't be too bloated at that point.

I love Surething, it rocks for lightscribe, and the version on lightscribe's web site is free.

SureThing is great, make sure you install the LightScribe patches and such that your DVD drive's manufacturer releases, and make sure you keep the software and firmware updated.

I used SureThing to burn 250 music CD labels for my brother's wedding, it worked great.

lightscribe ink is supposed to last a very long time, like 10,000 dvds/cds
it's not replaceable by the enduser.
you just buy a new drive for $35

Lightscribe isn't ink. It uses the laser in the drive to burn an image into specially-coated LightScribe discs.

Crap man 250 disc's, how long did that take! I love Litescribe but I couldn't imagine doing 250 labels in it :)

17 mins per label + 3 mins to burn the music, oh about 40 hours total using 2 burners at once.

I was surprised my burners didn't fizzle out, I bought them from newegg right before starting just so I could have them replaced when (i thought they would) burn out.

I saved my brother hundreds of dollars and I didn't mind doing it while I did other work anyway. The thing that bugged me is how optical drives completely lock up Windows whenever the tray is opening or closing, and while the CD is spinning up.

ditto here for surething, used it for years and never been sorry. well worth the trivial amount to upgrade from le to the full program.

Did they change the name of SureThing to Lightscribe Simple Labeler or is SureThing no longer free?

I have a Lightscribe DVD burner and have yet to burn a label. Gotta get something besides the absolute cheapest blank DVD's I suppose. :p

There was a 50-pack of LightScribe DVDs on dealsucker.com today for about $20.

LS media isn't that bad if you look around enough. I got 7 30-packs of CDs for about $7 each from microcenter.

LS media is twice the cost of comparable non-LS media.

Sharpies FTW.

people who buy LS media are obviously going to print labels on them right?
You could buy ink jet printable media for cheaper, but once you factor in ink, it won't be a huge difference.

I'm SURE if dude had used your advice and made his bro 250 wedding cd's with Sharpie labels his bro would have been THRILLED!

If you can find it on sale, which it is a lot, LS media isn't too bad. I typically get 30 dvd's for less then 20 bucks. And the labels I do are probably even nicer looking then the ones I do on my ip4000.

Sharpies are teh ghettos and look extremely tacky for anything anyone else will see.
