What's so wrong with activation? It takes less than one minute and it doesn't ask for personal information...what's the problem? Or do you just hate Microsoft and try to bash them every opportunity you get. Go away, I don't want to hear your whinny crying comments about how stupid you are.

I change hardware a lot and still have never had a problem with it. If it locks on you, call M$ and it's all of a 5 minute phone conversation TOPS (most of which is reading this 30 some digit code off the screen).

It's a lot more leinient(sp?) than you would think.

I can't find the article now but there is something like 10 "votes" that your hardware componenets get. For example, chipset gets 1 vote, RAM gets 1 vote, CPU gets 1 vote, etc. and for some strange reason NIC gets 3 votes. When a majority of your "votes" are still original you don't have to activate, when you have 5 or more new "votes" you need to reactivate XP. So to make it simple you can normally change 4 things without having to reactivate XP or you can change the NIC and one other thing....anything more than that and you need to make a phone call.

What do you mean reactivate? Like whenever you reload XP? Sure, I've done it several times. Only once did I have to call MS. I just gave them the code XP gave me, told them I had gotten a new motherboard and was reinstalling XP, and I was up and running with an activated copy in 10 minutes. No big deal.

Exactly.

*Yawn*, I loooove having a copy with a bulk license. No having to register, it just asks if you want and then lets you go... :)

I would have absolutely no problem with Microsoft Activitation if their reasons for it were more sincere.
They claim that Activitation was to prevent casual copying. But everyone knows that software companies
fact that stuff into the price of their software, much like clothing companies have to factor in shop lifting into prices.

So if activitation is suppose to prevent that, then the price of their products that have activitation should drop
not rise. So obviously they aren't refactoring out casual copying from the price of their software. I realize that
they don't know how much effect activitation will have on prices but I'll tell you what, they got some smart people
there, they could have made at conservative guess and dropped prices by that much. But they haven't. They are just
rise the price. So I tell you what you prove to me that activitation is just to prevent casual copying then lower the prices
of your software so that someone might be able to afford two copies of office and windows if they have two computers.
Otherwise, leave your prices high so I can buy my software which is priced for the casual copying and let me install it
on two machines cause that is what I paid for. I mean if Office Standard really worth $500 bucks come on.

I presently run Linux 90% of the time, but I also have to run Windows for writing CDRLs that HAVE to be in Word.
No Open Office, no Star Office. And I own the licence for both the OS and the Office. I also feel that Linux isn't that
far behind as many people think. Alot of people say that Linux is just so hard to install. But most people cannot install
windows. You basic Red Hat installer makes it much easier. I will admit the average computer user cannot rebuild a kernel
or do something from scratch, but with a automated installer they won't know the difference.

I installed a new faster hard drive into my computer as the "C" drive, and switched the old hard drive to another IDE.

Of course I had to reinstall XP (which I had previously activated).

I typed in the 48 alphanumeric character registration code. It tells me to go the Windows registration website.
I typed in the 48 alphanumeric character registration code. It tells me to call Microsoft product registration.
I tell the MS guy my 48 alphanumeric registration character code. I explain that I swapped hard drives. He asks, "Did you wipe the old XP off your old hard drive." I say no, I wanna transfer all my old settings over before FDISKing that drive. He says, "Sorry, can't register your XP." I remind him that BOTH hard drives are in the SAME computer, and that I'm not nuking the old XP until I can get my settings transferred. Sorry, I'm not a computer guru, I'm still relatively new at XP, it'll take me a few days to make sure that I got all the old information off my old XP.
He puts me on hold for a few minutes, then says "OK, just this one time, we'll let you register it. Remember to wipe out the old XP."

Gee thanks, Microsoft, for doing me such a big favor and making me feel like a criminal.

Just why the hell is the registration code so long anyways? That's like 200 zillion different possible combinations.
