I have been abstaining from activating my Win XP Pro, since I do hardware changes very often. I had installed fresh copies couple of times to achieve that. Tonight while trying to break the activation mechanism it got locked and I had to finally activate it...

I will never buy anything from Microsoft again ... I have, sitting in my box, Win98, WinNT and now WinXP ...
I feel like hand-cuffed by M$ (from upgrading my machine)

I hate Microsoft.

Ah, that's too bad. Bill asked me to say "thanks" for the brand loyalty you've shown over the years...oh...oops. I forgot...you don't actually PAY for your Operating Systems.

Is that dealing crack heads or cracy posts or cracy people?

Activating sucks and my sister lent her roomate a copy of Microsoft Office and then the roomate activated it on her own computer- essenially stealing the product.

It's not hypocracy and that's the problem. What other choice is there?!?! I mean come on, Linux is slick but it isn't quite there yet.

Yup... Or FreeBSD..Or stop using computers altogether.. Wait, DOS is free nowdays.. There you go!

McGaven - Sorry about your sister's dumb friend, she should have known not to "lend" software to other people. There is always Open Office which is free..

Since he claims to never buy Microsoft software _again_ it looks like he was actually stupid enough to pay for the crap this time.

Isn't that the WHOLE POINT of activating software??? Activation is supposed to keep people from loaning out software to other people. Am I missing something here? If you don't like it, go to Open Office or some other piece of software that is free and doesn't want to be paid for.

I dislike the concept of Product Activation to the point where I will refuse to buy into it if at all possible.

Open Office is actually pretty sweet now. It can interface with MS software for the most part, does everything regular Office does, and offers a few extra incentives. Give it a shot, it's not that bad. Plus it's FREE

Easy fix. Aquire the warez version off of that nifty p2p program. Use your cd key and you wont have to activate it, EVAR. Microsoft has a prob with it, tell them to stfu.

Good Bye

I use the warez version of xp that keeps it from requiring activation but I do have a licensed version on the shelf. I know this violates the EULA but it's my reasonable compromise to their seemingly unreasonable terms.

In the end I'm probably going to hell anyway. :)

One question: have any of you ever had to reactivate Win XP? I'm sure someone here has, but I haven't seen posts on that subject yet. I keep changing parts on my home computers and work computers and keep wondering when that will hit me. But so far, no problems.

I you buy the WinXP, it is for the license. I own a license, so I just downloaded the corporate edition off the web, and never had to activate anything.

What do you mean reactivate? Like whenever you reload XP? Sure, I've done it several times. Only once did I have to call MS. I just gave them the code XP gave me, told them I had gotten a new motherboard and was reinstalling XP, and I was up and running with an activated copy in 10 minutes. No big deal.

yeah! there you go.. many of you who support m$ $hit of activation are using either preloaded windows on your ready made pc or not really interested in playing with the h/w. Or, could be using a warez cracked version already (time to check who is hypocritic).

Actually Turbotax activation was fine with me, since I used it only once and did not need it after that ... I read so many posts against that .. again it is time to see who is hypocritic.

I have a msdn (or whatever) version of xp as well. Which I installed and re-installed at least 7 times in my machine. I bought this because I wanted to have SP1. Probably I will find a crack for this too, before I get my new harddisk and 8RDA+. If at all I have to call M$ to reactivate, I will call them at 3 o'clock in the morning (childish, eh!).
