iS MY BOARD DEAD?

I have an Epox 8HKA+ and it nevers botts, giving me a regular beep, a 7h message, and a black screen.

I am using an XP1800, and can't even get a screen with which to update the bios

Three things come to mind:

If the fans come on but, no beep, no hdd activity, and no output to your screen, check these:

  1. 1. Make sure the powersupply is set to 110v and not 220v. I ran across this once myself.

    2. The processor my be dead,..again, personal experience. :( Try another processor.

    3. Check and ensure that the motherboard is not grounding out against something, this usually happens when a mobo standoff touches a soldered point on the back of the motherboard.

    4. Reset your BIOS. See your manual for the (CMOS clear) jumper.

    5. Again, ensure that the BIOS version of your motherboard corresponds to the processor. Ie,..make sure the BIOS you are using will support an Athlon XP. The only way to be sure is use an Athlon or Duron and fire it up. Then flash to a newer BIOS if necessary.

Post your findings. :)

I had a board that worked fine a few days, then had a similar problem to the one you described. Blank screen, weird error code. Replacing the board solved the problem. Can you try the CPU in another machine?

Scott had some good ideas.

Also try the following:

Check that your IDE plugs are plugged in all the way
Check that your IDE plugs are inserted the proper way
Make sure that your ram is seated all the way properly
thermal paste under your cpu?
Check to see if anyPCI cards aren't seated properly, this also includes your AGP card. Fix it if they are.
Take out every PCI device except for your video card. This should rule out if any of your PCI devices are fried.

Like Scott said, post your findings :)
