ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Police have arrested four women in an investigation into prostitution ads that were posted on a popular Internet classifieds site.

The women were arrested over the last three weeks at hotels near Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, police said. They were charged with illegally soliciting sex.

Anne Arundel County authorities began the investigation after reading ads posted on Craigslist.org that offered sex services for $140 to $300.

Police said Tuesday the women allegedly arranged several weeks' worth of appointments in advance, then flew into a city to meet with clients. They then traveled to their next destination.

Experts said Craigslist has become a favorite way for prostitutes to find clients and set up operations in cities where they don't have a network. Classified ads in a variety of categories are free on Craigslist.

"The Internet facilitates the mobility and the outreach to clients, and there are a number of Web sites, including Craigslist, that these workers use to announce their presence in a particular city during a particular day," said Ronald Weitzer, a sociology professor at George Washington University.

Police said two of the four women are from California and Illinois and the others live in Washington, D.C. and Laurel. Trials are pending.

I have used Craigslist for selling and buying items for quite a while. The people I have dealt with have always been upstanding and friendly. It seems that there is a certain feeling among users of the site that everyone is getting such a great deal without the hassle of Ebay.

I hope the section of the site dealing with sales and jobs isn't affected by this. There will probably be new guidelines in the personals area, and that will also attract law enforcement looking for illegal activity.

Going after online prostitution is such a wasted effort (waste of our tax dollars). There are so many other crimes that warrant the PD's attention, ie murderers, thieves, rapists, and drug dealers.

The DC area of CL is a den of perverts and rascists. But like that other dude said, this is waste of time for the police. They should spend more time cracking down on heroin dealers and less time surfing craigslist.

Yup. With the online factor, you don't even have "streetwalkers", which was the primary complaint against it... You also don't have (as many) pimps, and both parties are more protected.

Wapp: Every adult area of CL is like that :D

Sex is a natural human act. Busting prostitutes is a huge waste of law enforcement resources. Go bust gangs, drug dealers, rapists and murderers instead.

They just did this to grab some headlines. God knows if they've done any important police work in their lives besides writing tickets and being jackoffs.

At least they've wrote some tickets. You're only batting .500.

In the mean time, thousands of children have been molested and/or abused, 10's of thousands of grams of crank or crack have been cooked up.

The same repressed people who have issues with breast feeding...

Agreed, what a waste of police resources. They need to legalize prostitution in every state once and for all so it can actually become a clean sanctioned business.
