It can be done. I know somebody on here has their Wii modded. It's not legal though as the poster claims since it violates the DMCA's ban on circumventing copy protection.

so does the 'mod' just allow you to some how copy a game (like a movie) and then play that copied version?

how does the DMCA pertain to stuff like making a backup copy of a movie?

I admit I am not up on the legal aspect of these things anymore...I thought you could make a backup of something if you didn't distribute it or benefit from the copy?

The DMCA allows you to legally copy something you legally own for personal use. So ripping a CD to your iPod is ok. So if you have a CD, you can copy it. The big BUT is that it's illegal to crack DRM. That's why it's not legal to rip DVDs or install Mac OS X on PC hardware. The law contradicts itself of course, but why would the gov't make it easy to understand!

If that is true...then anything with DRM in it is illegal to copy...I get that

How is it that AnyDVD isn't illegal then as it is a tool to break the DRM?

or is it illegal?

It's illegal to sell in the US. But, it's not illegal to possess, IIRC.

I came across some posts on a forum about the program the person on CL is talking about. Its easy to find if you look hard enough.

The ONLY reason I would want to mod mine is to be able to play Contra, Blaster Master and Rygar of which I own on my NES to be played on my Wii and not damage the cartidges from being pulled in and out of the console.

We are thinking about getting a Wii and I was curious how you go about playing these old time games on the Wii...

Do you have to purchase them through Nintendo or do you basically need just the ROM file or is there another method to playing them?

I am Wii-tarded :)

QFT

It is illegal to sell or even distribute software that can break DRM. It is legal to possess it, but it is illegal to use it to circumvent copy protection. After the DRM is broken(which is illegal), it is legal to make a copy of the disc.

Confused yet?

You download them for a small fee from Nintendo. Here is a list of games available:

http://www.nintendo.com/wii/virtualconsole/games

This was one of the selling points that got me to buy a Wii. I have come severely disappointed with Nintendo that they have not made all of their games from the NES, SNES and N64 available for download for a small fee. All they ever say when someone complains is licensing or some crap. This is Nintendo and they already had somewhat of rights to the games, why do they have so much trouble now?

The really annoying one is that versions of Contra or Castlevania are on there so why is it they can't put other Konami games (like the original Contra) up? It makes no sense to me and I will most not support another product from Nintendo after this one if it keeps up.

The reason AnyDVD isn't illegal is because the company is based in Antigua, which has weak copyright laws. The US government can't prosecute them because they don't have jurisdiction to do so. The MPAA also can't sue. At best they can ban the sale in the US. Germany has outlawed it for example. With the nature of the internet though, it's hard to do this.

Sorta a long story. I put CFW on my PSP before I left for Iraq. Came back, and wanted to put a newer version on it. However, my pandora battery and magic memory stick. I screwed it up, file in the wrong spot, and it put official firmware on it. Arg! So I searched craigslist for someone to do it for me. It was cheaper doing that, than buying a new battery and stick.

Knock on his door, and it takes at least 30 seconds before he answers it. All the while, lots of movement going on inside. So I want into this dudes trailer, and hes naked other than a pair of boxers... Hes about 6', pushing 300lbs easily. Very white, and round. Has a long pony tail, with some gray. Some kind of weird eye problem. One was a different color, and looks off to the side, while the other looked at me. Has nothing but PC parts, xboxs, 360s, Wiis, PSPs, DSs, etc laying around. His couch has a coffee table in front of it, with a TV on it. With consoles and his PC hooked up to it. He claimed he could do anything, to anything. I believe him. In any event, he said he could "soft" mod or "hard" mod a Wii. Soft mod is obviously firmware, and hard mod is an actual chip. Which he recommended, and about $70. With it, you can update it as you like, and it wouldnt affect being able to play games.

Lots of text, for really only one important sentence. I wish I could have taken a picture of the joint. Felt like a X-Files episode. Kinda freaky.

Nintendo doesn't have any rights except for the games that they develop. Who knows why some publishers are not eager to release their old software on the Wii. Some, like Rare, are now tied to competitors. Others, like Square Enix, are still releasing the IP on new systems (Chrono Trigger DS). I do not see why you would blame Nintendo except for the games that they actually developed.

Sounds like a softmod for the price.

There's soft mods and hardware mods out.
