On FS/T forums, I make offers below the asking price for OBO. But for Craigslist, I have come across people making offers below asking. Is that the norm?

Yes, that is the norm. If no one pays your asking price, you take the best offer.

Sorry guys, I got confused. I originally meant that the seller was taking OBO as bids. "I have someone *offering* $XX..."

I had a seller do that, and I told him that I'm not on craigslist to do ebay

Then you let the moron that is going over list get it, unless it's some sort of unique item you can't get otherwise.

$500 OBO means I will take $500 now but if I cant get 500 bucks I will take the next best offer that is reasonable.

It has nothing to do with bidding and if you're paying above asking price you've been had.

OBO = "or best offer" and is very common for any person selling anything anywhere. Cars on the side of the road for sale with $5000 OBO, classified ad for a fridge $150 OBO. It's very common. I don't see the problem here.

edit: you will also see sales for "BO" (best offer) with no asking price. Not as common, but been around longer than ebay.

So you think someone is going to see an item listed for "$200 OBO", and pay MORE than the asking price? wtf?

OP made another post about it included bidding too. So I think it was saying $200 OBO (and if enough bids come in and the best offer is $250, that wins).

i guess its annoying, but everyone wants the most they can get for something so im not surprised that some people play it that way...and he may be full of shit anyway just trying to get a few more bucks out of you.

ive made OBO sells before, i dont play people against each other, and usually just wait 2 or 3 days and see what offers i get before i let something go.

But if I listed an item for $200 and someone offered my $250, I'd sure as hell take it.

It could happen if two people came up quickly and started bidding, but usually the "BO" is below the price. It's just saying that the price isn't firm.

OBO = you will entertain bids, usually of an insulting nature. If you receive a bid anything more than your asking price, you are dealing with a scammer.

And I love people who come and say "What's the lowest you'll take?". DO you not understand how this works? I put out my price in the ad. If you want to bargain with me, make me an offer.

Also had someone who posted a riding lawnmower for $1000 obo. In laws asked the guy what the lowest was he'd take. he said $1000. They asked about the OBO and he said that it stood for "Original Buyer Owner". *eyeroll*

Typically the way it works is the seller will entertain offers lower than posted. It can swing the other way though, and a particularly desirable item can go for more than asking price. Running an auction from a posted ad is poor form though. The item should be sold to the first person that meets the asking price. In the new electronic age, where you may read several emails at once responding to the ad, the item should go to the first mail, or highest price.

I think everyone saying "lol idiot it's or best offer" is misunderstanding this thread. He knows what it means, but he is asking what the normal offer is relative to the asking price, e.g. above or below.

yeah I agree, big

OP are you asking why people on CL do the same thing you do on FS/T, that is, offer below the asking price?

Or did you mean ABOVE asking price on CL?
