Interesting. How would you sell a motorcycle and guarantee its security when the test ride question comes up? Maybe make the guy leave behind a deposit... no idea.

My motorcycle was stolen last tonight from the loves outside fort carson. A white man in his late 30's or early 40's took it for a test ride and never returned he has blonde hair and is approx 5'8" and 150lbs. If you have any information please contact the fountain police dept or myself 719-251-

If the guy leaves his car while he goes on the test ride, it helps with the comfort level a lot. Also doing what car dealerships do and getting a driver's license number goes a long way. That way you have something solid and traceable linking the thief.

When I sold mine I straight up said no way in hell is anyone driving it before buying it. Offered to take anyone who wanted on a ride with me or demonstrate it works in front of them but it's to much risk to me.

No one had a issue with this and understood and selling it was very easy.

You require the buyer leave a deposit of the full asking price, in cash.

They could have stolen the car from a gullible Craigslister who let the interest buyer test drive it by himself.

The best bike ad I saw was when a guy posted the directions to steal his bike. The ad said something like "I usually keep my bike parked <location on the street> with the wheel unlocked. I'm not usually home between certain hours but if you want to hop on it and wheel it around to test, you go right ahead."

When I wanted to test ride a used bike at the dealership, they wanted proof of insurance faxed over to them.

When I bought my last used bike, the seller said no test rides. I told him that I would let him hold the cash for the bike but there was no way I was buying it without riding it. He let me ride it and I kept the money in my pocket.

If I was selling, I am holding on to something the buyer owns. When I sold my truck, I held on to the keys to the car they drove over in.

LOL found it: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=274655

I am selling my 2006 Kawasaki ZX-10R--Black on Black. It has been down once, but was mostly saved due to the frame sliders. I have replaced almost all of the plastics with new.

Sorry for no pictures. If you would like to see the bike, it is sitting inbetween 1st and 3rd Streets on N Street NW.

I leave the head unlocked so I can easily move it to the other side of the street when they do the street cleaning. Feel free to push the bike to examine the front-end, etc. Please just leave it in about the same location it was at.

I am rarely home, so if you want to schedule an appt. to hear it run, please send me an email. The bike runs great, very strong. It has a power commander and some other goodies.

EDIT 3/10/09 -------------- Here are some pictures. As of tonight, the bike is located right on the corner of 1st Street NW and N Street NW. Please stop by and check it out.

EDIT 3/12/09 -------------- The bike has approx. 9250 miles on it. I'll include a set of slightly rashed carbon akropovic pipes (not picutred), a rear seat cowl, some extra plastics and a spare tank. The bike comes with a salvage title, but don't let that scare you. It was made salvage from cosmetic damage only, and almost all of the plastics (and the tank) were replaced with new. The bike has been well cared for, always serviced, and always under full coverage insurance. I'm going to be away for the next few days, feel free to check the bike out and then email for an appt. if you're interested.

car dealers do that to run your credit report while you are out driving the shiny new car.

I don't let anyone test ride my bikes when I sell them and I've never traded in a bike. Always sell them private party.

Prevention of something like this is rather simple. No test rides. Cash in hand or Cashier's Check & you drive away with the vehicle. People who let this kind of thing happen don't have much common sense.

He basically let the guy steal his bike in front of his face. Not too bright.

Colorado law may be like Oklahoma.

In Oklahoma they would consider it that the guy gave the test rider the bike.

You would have to be retarded to buy a bike without test driving it.

You must live in a fucked up state. In California that would be illegal and impossible.
1) You have to have permission to run credit
2) You need the person's SSAN

Bikes are a tough one.

I want cash in hand before a test ride, and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS bring a friend - preferably armed, and meet in a very public area. I've heard of at least two or three cases where someone showed up and was robbed for their cash, bike, and etc. IF NO CASH, NO TEST RIDE - PERIOD. Sooooooo many bikes get dropped/dumped/stolen because of this.

The test ride is the absolute LAST part of the sale. It is assumed that if nothing is found on the test ride then the bike is sold. If I get a suspicious buyer I offer to ride them on the back, or let them pace me in their car as I row through the gears etc. If they have a check, then the bill of sale is signed and check is cashed through their bank before a test ride - and again, that's the last part of the sale so there is no "oh I don't like the way it corners" or some crap. There are people out there who do nothing more than casually test ride junk to see how it feels.

For an expensive bike (Duc, aprilia, etc) I prefer to do it at the dealer... Offer to pay for the inspection if it fails, and the buyer pays if it passes.

FYI.... People often steal cars this way too... They'll steal a 'nice' 40-50k vehicle and show up in it, so you think they're legit since they have a nice car... Until they don't come back. You call the cops, cops show up and find out their nice 50k escalade is stolen from a few weeks ago and they're just cycling through.

No they don't, at least not in any state that I know. Nobody should get a soft hit on their credit without authorization.
