Crackling/popping sound! UGH

Argh... every sound file that gets played by any program ends up crackling/popping. Its especially true when any other program is opened or used... it seems to have started after i upgraded to win2k.. although i think i moved around some hardware.. im not 100% though... i have an acoustic edge and cambridge 1800 4.1's... the popping is in all of the speakers... and i checked all the physical connections.. they seem sound.. i think i read somewhere that theres somethin sometimes with win2k and the acoustic edge.. this true? or whats up? time to RMA the card?

make sure your hardware acceloration is set to max.

go to control panel-->sounds &multimedia-->audio-->advanced-->performance.

Set this to max.

i have the soundblaster and the altec lansing acs54 and i get crackling if my sound levels are too high. if you lower them down to %50 and raise the volume on your speakers that might help. try that and let us know.

hardware acceleration was maxed, and i'll try the volume trick later when my roomate is not sleeping .. btw.. if i play a game or listen to a cd through my cd rom.. the popping is RIDICULOUS

ugh.... nope.. still freaking out.. i think somethins wrong with win2k or my hd or my processor or somethin.. im gettin weird performance spikes...

Win2k really enjoys sharing IRQs, sometimes sound cards don't like this, particularly the Monster Sound cards (200MX or something if I remember correctly). Something to try would be forcing win2k to use a non-shared irq for your sound card. As to how you'd go about doing that, it can be done from the device manager, but last time I tried windows 2000 switched my irqs back the way it wanted when I rebooted.

I realize that I didn't really provide you with a solution, but I think looking into the irqs would be a good idea.

how about... a fresh install. try backing up your important stuff, like documents and things that you cant easily download or install. then install a fresh one and put stuff back in, just a thought.
