My computer makes this crackling noise when I browse menus, move windows, and scroll-bar. My speakers are not near my monitor so it's not that. It happens with both keyboard and mouse so its not either of them.

Anyone know what it could be???

I have an Abit KD-7 with an "Advance Audio 97" built in soundcard running windows XP. Changing drivers is an option but I wanted to rule out other options if possible first...

Thanks

This can also be caused by the "line in" being at full volume. You should mute it whenever you are not using it.

I know this thread a bit old, but I have the same problem, moving windows/scrolling creates this little annoying screech sound. It seems to be pretty intelligent, in the way that if you can't scroll a certain window, there wont be any noise. If anyone has any ideas your help will be appreciated.

just mute line-in and cd-in! All it is is HF interference coming from the IO subsystems, by muting all "open" ports that would transfer this interference to the Line Out you effectively get rid of the problem.

It's most noticeable in IE, but is still present in other programs where scroll is available.
I tried turning input devices off on the soundcard, disabling the sound card from bios, and unplugging the speakers off; none of that worked.
From doing some search on the web it seems like this problem is somewhat common, however I wasn't able to find any working solutions for this. Also it sounds like its coming from the motherboard, but has to do something with XP, because like I said before the noise seems intelligent. Also, there's annoying noises when I move the window or when I click in certain situations.
I'll keep trying to find the solution, if someone has further suggestions, please let me know.

Intelligent noise, eh? Maybe it's plotting to enslave you, and make YOU do the computing....

I have this... I was able to get rid of that noise by completely removing my sound drivers (I noticed it only started at a few seconds in to the XP boot - which I suspected meant it only started after the sound drivers loaded)...

Later, I decided I still need some sound and installed the drivers again.
