Crackling coming through Logitech X-240s

I got some Logitech X-240 speakers for christmas. Unfortunately, there's some crackling and stuff coming through on the lowest volume settings.

Since at the time audio was being put out by my onboard sound, I assumed the interference was electrical, from my motherboard. I decided to rearrange my fan on my Accelero so I could fit my Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic (not the crappy fake x-fi) on my mATX motherboard.

The problem still persists, though is certainly more bearable - as a workaround, even on the onboard sound, I would just lower my windows sound settings, since on higher volume settings there's no crackling, but bass didn't seem to come through as nicely. It certainly sounds great now, even with windows sound turned down.

Any way to fix the crackling?

Replace the speakers. The crackling is likely coming from teh speakers themselfs. If it where from the onboard sound the crackling would be constant. So this is either due to a bad conmponent on the speaker's amp or the volume knob is bad. This kind of thing is common on old sound systems where the volume has been set to the same setting for many years. Then when you go to turn it down or even up it starts to crackle from poor contact in the knob.

Try plugging the speakers into another source (like, say, an MP3 player) to see if the crackling persists. If you have a laptop or another computer, that'll be better. I'm actually not sure if the MP3 player is such a good idea...

Try muting all the mixer inputs in the console launcher/creative control panel, particularly mic in. Kind of an old bug that seems to be fixed/broken on and off, but it may work for you.

I haven't had this issue with my 230's. One recommendation is to make sure that your onboard sound is turned to decent levels (half way plus) to drive good voltage to the speakers and use the speaker knob to control your physical volume.

Only when the volume was changed?

Simply turn the speakers off and spin the volume control. I don't know if it's corrosion inside the potentiometer but it seems to have the same effect (and cure).
