Crackling and static using M-audio fast track through usb

My son is using an M-audio fast track pro with Komplete BX5a monitor/speakers Akai MKP49 keyboard. This is hooked up via usb to a newer build MSI Z87-g45 mobo and Haswell cpu with 8GB ram.

He's getting some crackling and static when he has music program open and is multitasking etc.. Originally I thought it was because it was connected through the usb instead of the sound card(which is not an option) Nice MSI mobo with on board sound blaster.

His previous comp didn't have this problem(older dual core on a gigabyte board using on board sound)

Are we even utilizing the sound card buy going the the usb? Thinking about trying a dedicated sound card?

Anyone who is familiar with this type of setup?
