cracked rib or just a bruise?

To make a long story short, a friend and I went to a party, drank nothing but hard liquor all night, and decided, just for kicks, to wrestle on our way home. In a snow covered gravel lot. So, aside from the various cuts and bumps, I notice that part of my chest hurts pretty bad to just be a bruise, especially for one that isnt showing any discoloration. It only hurts when I put pressure on it. It hurts over a 3" high, 6" wide section that starts just below my pecs and an inch away from my sternum.

Anyway, to those who laughed at the proceding story and decide to post belittling comments, I would just like to say that college is great :D

Go to student health and have them take a look at it.

The problem with that is that I have a balance in my bank account of $5 right now, and its $25 for a visit. In other words, unless I already know I have a problem, I'm not going in there to have them look at it.

strained muscle...
no discoloration, no bruise. can't feel any cracks in the ribs? no busted rib...
don't waste money on a doc even if it is a cracked rib. all they can do for something like that is wrap you in an ace type banage and tell you not to strain yourself...
if it was broke you would know it! had many of those riding rodeo.
paid way too much to too many different quacks, in too many different towns to know, that it is just better to not lift anything on that side for a couple weeks and wrap your chest, even if it is cracked, because that is what they will do and nothing more than take your money.

but don't take my word as the gosple i am only talking on experience...
allways remember this:
they have to treat you and you can allways make payments.

Sounds like quite the night.

It was. The best part is that I won the wrestling match.

Anything happen to your partner. Sounds like he has bragging rights for hurting you.

His glasses got busted, he has a couple of visible bruises, his elbows are cut up just like mine, and he was bleeding pretty well from a cut just above his fingernail. Oh, and he has a jammed finger on his other hand.

EDIT: He didnt "hurt" me enough to even make me feel it at the time.

I know for a fact that getting a bruised sternum in most cases dose not leave any visable mark, I got one of those once and holy sh*t did it hurt. Makes me wonder why doctors call them bruised sternums , but I guess that can't be the case since you say it's not the sternum.

The stuff on treatment is what I thought it is like. Much like breaking a finger, where all they do for your average break is buddy tape it for you and tell you not to use it.

It was wrestling till someone got pinned. If it was a hey-lets-fight-for-the-hell-of-it I probably wouldnt have gotten into it due to my broken knuckle, which I broke 2 weeks ago... in a fight. Punching someone when you have broken a bone in your hand usually isnt a good idea unless you are really pissed at them.

Don't bother with the student health thing. All they will tell you is that there's no point in finding out if it's a bruise or a something else, because the treatment is the same (rest) -- that's what they did to me after a b-ball injury of similar description.
