So I cracked the lcd.. Sigh.. it's an sr27k- one of those ultra portables.. I can't really afford to get it replaced by sony since that'll cost around $700... The part itself is an insanely expensive $500 - is it easy to install? Is there any way to get the thng fixed for less? I can't justify $500 because a refurn apple ibook is around $650 and is a nicer computer than the sony.. Any ideas?

Dude, you should have bought a Dell, and their complete care warranty. You could run over your laptop with your car and Dell would replace it no questions asked. Sony makes OK laptops but their customer support is damn near non existent an hovers near the 7th Circle of Hell. And of course the prices of their products continues to go unjustified.

Do you have a pic of your cracked LCD? I wasn't aware that they could be cracked. Visual aid would help here.

Oh and here are my thoughts on Macs. Say no to mac

Basically when an lcd breaks on a laptop that is not under warranty, it is cheaper to just replace the laptop. For whatever reason, they charge you almost as much as a new unit.

Agree w/egale. I had a LCD go bad on a company laptop. The laptop itself was several years old and the cheapest price we could find to replace its LCD was $700.00.

You just can't justify that kind of money when Dell is/has been offering Inspiron 1100 notebooks at $599-699! (base models).

Maybe you'd have better luck finding someone with the same exact laptop as you have, but their mainboard, or something else seriously went wrong with it. And you can try to bargain for their busted laptop and use the LCD screen from it.

Not easy to replace at all. So that's it for this unit - buy a new one, and GET INSURANCE FOR IT THIS TIME.

Yup, if you do decide to go Dell like someone here stated, be sure to spend the extra 100.00 or so to get the complete care option. I wasn't kidding when I said you can run over it with your car and they will replace it at no charge. Best 100.00 you'll ever spend in terms of safeguarding your laptop against everything.

Good Luck.

My UXGA 15" LCD on my Dell notebook started getting red lines through it and I purchased an Ultra Sharp replacement off of ebay for $150. Not bad at all..

You can always plug up a external Monitor and use it. I have a dell8100 with the ultra1600x1200 resolution and I love this screen way more than any of my monitors. I never get headaches looking at this screen for long periods of time.

If you buy another of the same company laptop you can savage or have backup Harddrive, Memory sticks and .. . well, I guess thats it. Too bad you can build Laptops like desktops. WYSIWYG. IBM laptops are best., they take so much abuse. I have a really old one that has win3.1 that was givin to me that still works, .. but I dont know what to do with it.

You know, I think that's what I'll do.. I'll reinstall windows and give it to my mom (along with an extra monitor that I have)... Turn a tragedy into a new computer for the mom's ;) I'll get a job and get an IBM or an apple with as long of a warranty as they sell - these things are too expensive to be so fragile (granted, IBMs are definately more rugged than flimsy sony's)
