Got an older laptop that now has a cracked screen. a local repair shop tells me 500 ballpark to fix! Dang that smarts! now the 'puter isn't worth 500 any more. what should i do? is it possable to fix another way?

it's a

Toshiba
2615dvd/6.0
433celleron
64meg ram
6 gig hd
12.1" display

is it worth ANYTHING any more?

You could check this site and see if you wanna try that. Otherwise, if the screen still works, donate it to charity or something, spend $800-1000 and get yourself a better laptop.

Check Ebay and do a search for Toshiba and your model. See if you can find one that has problems but where the display is still good. Sometimes you can get them for well under $100 if people don't go nuts bidding. Worth a try. My laptop had some problems and I got a broken one but with the parts needed for way less than just one part would have cost new. The Displays especially of they are Svga or XGA cost a LOT. Worth a try I think if you can find one with other problems. Just be sure to email the person and find out if the display is in good shape and still works.

It will be cheaper and less hassle to just buy a used laptop on E-Bay - any brand you want.

BestBuy has $150 rebates on all Laptops this week. A coworker just picked up a Toshiba - $150 MIR from Best Buy, $50 MIR from Toshiba.

Not bad.

Thanks for the ideas! Think I'll look around for a used one with problem see if i can't find a good deal. How hard is it to switch out the screens?

ebay is perfect for this

you can replace your laptop with the same model for $200-400 dollars...

i would personally sell the broken one on ebay, and buy a brand new one. you do have options tho, at least options less then $500.

It's not very hard to change the lcd on a laptop. Its actually quite easy if you have a small phillips screwdriver and maybe a 6 , 8 , and possibly size 10 torx set.

I recently did the same thing to my old Sony laptop. Take the LCD panel apart far enough to get the generic part number off the back of the panel. In my case the LCD was made by Sharp and the part number was LQ12x24. Do a search on your number and don't give up. I found a price range of from $1100-$175 for the same part. There are a jillion used part and surplus sources. It took no more than 5 minutes to install the replacement panel.
